Been at our current address for 12 years. We paid TW buy DD each month. In 2019, they just stopped taking the DD and never sent a bill ever again. No change of bank account, address or any other details. We don't have a meter.

What do folks recommend as being the best course of action here - I understand that 6 years might be the furthest they can back bill and since this is their mistake I could probably negotiate a settlement - but since we are approaching that time limit, is it best to just leave it and see what happens?

For now, we had the same when we moved house and genuinely didn't realise we weren't paying for our water. They realised and we had to pay the amount over the next xx months/ years to clear the bill we hadn't paid.

(Not Thames btw)

I thought I heard that in the case of electricity, they can't backbill more than 12 months. But maybe water is different. They do it anyway in breach of the rules.

If they later come after you for old bills, just tell them... it's water under the bridge
