I know this is a very middle age and middle class problem, but so many roads these days which are managed by National Highways rather than local councils have verges which are deep in litter. It always looks worst at this time of year with no greenery, but do they actually employ anybody to clean up the litter, or are we just accepting it? I don't remember it being this bad years ago, but then I don't remember ever seeing many litter pickers either. At least local councils do try and keep their area clean, but the A roads are filthy.

In America I believe they use prisoners to do work like litter picking, wouldn't that be a good use of otherwise un-used resources here? Obviously better if it wasn't dirty in the first place.

Depends where you are, we regularly see litter pickers working along our verges in Gwynedd. Those on probation are often used.

It's in every fking verge on every road it seems. Sometimes I try and keep an eye out to see if I'm right and I am.

I have always thought it should be some part of some sort of national service type scheme. Maybe if everyone had to endure hours and days of picking up litter it might make them think twice as they get older.

Downside is they'll need to close atleast 1 lane either side with cones, flashing lights and reduced speed limit with average speed cameras for over a week

I live on the outskirts of a small town in Wiltshire and need to walk along a footpath for about 400 metres to reach somewhere where I can let the dog off for a run. It looks like there’s a litter festival going on along the roadside, because there’s a growing amount of rubbish daily which must have been thrown from cars.
Quite what kind of upbringing people have had to make them think this is acceptable, I really don’t know, but it really irritates me.

It should be the penalty for littering - rather than a fine.

I guess some of it is intentional - lorry driver's and their bottles of piss - but some will be blown in from elsewhere and then get stuck in verges and hedges, some will be rubbish left from road works etc, some will be fly tipping.

But yes, much better if it wasn't there in the first place.

This I have never chucked anything from my car window neither have my passengers. This also applies to all the people I know since I am about 5….

Don’t understand the concept but then again a lot of people live in filthy homes.

People just don’t care about the others, the environment, they are mostly selfish and horrible. Take law and order checks from society and it would be very clear how bad we are as a race…

Because there’s a whole load of people in this country who don’t give a damn, sadly. It’s only going to get worse.

Can you send them to the Midlands please?

Strange, we have plenty of criminals here. Wonder what they're doing instead.

The govt could put a levy on McDonalds and Red Bull to pay for litter picking as their customers seem generally incapable of using a bin.

Disgraceful isn't it how the Highways Agency throw all that litter about.

Oh hang on, no it's not them it's lazy tosser members of the public.

Litter picking at the side of the highway is bloody dangerous work, you need to close off Lane 1 or on a single carriageway operate some form of TM

I've worked alongside motorways, you need specialist training and nerves of steel sometimes the way some folk drive.

I'd have no problem with this, so long as it was combined with big signs saying "Your journey is only being disrupted because of tcensoredts chucking litter out of their vehicles"

One of the apprentices threw his rubbish out of the van window at one place I worked. I pulled over and made him clear it up. He reported me for bullying.

Same.

I generally spend 3 or 4 weeks in France every year and have driven all over that country east to west and north to south... I very rarely (if ever) see any litter on the roads, motorways or other. I suspect the French have a greater civic pride.

You'd think so, wouldn't you but it would seem that the 'powers that be' disagree. The local parish council, fed up with the district council failing to do anything (other than send out council tax bills), tried to have the Community Service 'students' attend to pick up litter. You'd think they'd been asked to dig a new channel tunnel with their bare hands; everything was simply too much trouble, risk assessments, insurance, specialist training etc. etc.. In effect, after months of 'debate', it was determined that they couldn't do anything, so the end result is local volunteers doing it.

You sometimes wonder who has the most 'rights' in this countryl
