Hi my mum currently drives a Mk4 Clio, where the timing chain is in need of replacement. Her local garage have simply told her they don't want to take this job on... so I got her a quote, which comes out around £1,000 and she's said she'd rather put that money towards a new car.

She'd like to spend £3,000 but will stretch to £4,500 if its worthwhile. She is not prepared to travel more than 15 miles, and won't accept deliveries (doesn't trust it now after issues with last car) so options pretty limited. Looking at other parameters on AutoTrader, we're coming back with around 90 cars. She wants manual and petrol, 10 years max, maybe 11-12 at a push, doesn't care about mileage as she does less than 2,000 miles a year. Category cars an option. Oh and tax £35 maximum.

The obvious choice is one of those 1.0T Fiesta's, but they have a bad reputation right? She's never serviced a car in over 40 years of driving, so I don't trust her to keep on top of that, but she may do if I drum it into her enough.

Best I've seen on my search results are the following, what do you reckon to these, any specific issues to look out for? She used to have a Golf and loved it, and my own Mini was probably my favourite hatchback I've had!

There's also Corsa's, and Fiat 500's to consider...we have a friend selling a cheap Fiat 500. Let me know your thoughts, thanks.

Agree with this.

My 79 year old mother i's just looking at replacing her 10 year old Yaris. It's been very reliable and economical and nothing wrong with it now other than she wasn't to change before she gets to old to learn to get used to a new car biggrin £3-4k should get you around the 10 year old mark.

My wife used to have a second generation Jazz. About as reliable as a brick, and not much more expensive to service.

Unfortunately not a single Jazz or Yaris within 15 miles of where she lives (within price range)

Is the 1.2 mentioned above shared between cars? I've just looked at all the Japanese & Korean cars available and this little cute thing is only just down the road...

There's also a Nissan Note that's a 1.2

That kia looks like a serviceable wee thing. Bare in mind 3 doors aren't as easy as 5 doors.

Agreed, I currently have a three door and will never buy another one.

I assume the Clio is the 0.9 TCE? How many miles on the clock? You mention she never services car, I assume this is why the chain has stretched?

Definitely has to be a Jazz or Yaris, possibly an Aygo especially in 5 door although limited choice rather than 3 doors.

Are you able to drive your mother slightly further afield in order to spread the range and quantity of cars available?

From 1st April the lowest car road licence will increase to £195, so if she wants to pay less, at least for the 1st year, make sure its bought and taxed this month!

Hadn't heard of that, but just looked into it and it appears that's only for cars newer than 2017 so she'll be alright this time around.

Believe it or not this is including my offer to drive her further afield lol. She originally said within 5 miles... problem is, any further and even if I take her, she'll still have to drive it home, unless I can find garages offering delivery

She is not bothered about 3/5 doors. Her car before the Clio was 3 door and that serviced her for 8 years without an issue.

Clio I think is on about 110k miles. Yes it's the 0.9ltr car.
