Hi all

I’m looking to spend between 5-10k on a car.
Single man, no kids etc. My only requirements are something reasonably reliable and on the cheaper side to run!

So, in my position, what would you get?

Suggestions or links greatly appreciated thankyou in advance!

Toyota GT86?

ETA having looked on Auto trader, the prices of these have firmed up over the last couple of years.

Any other parameters... do you need something practical with space for hobbies, dogs etc, or are you looking for something a bit sporty?

Not really no… it can be as impractical as you like!

If you want reliable, low running costs and cheapish to repair then just look at what taxi drivers use.

Would get quite a lot of loaded Skoda for 10k and they are well put together.

One of these? I found the diesel better than the petrol.

Seem to also hold their value well.

Toyota Yaris (2014-2017): The Yaris is exceptionally reliable, economical to run, and has low insurance costs. You can find good examples in your budget range, and they hold their value well. They're practical enough for a single person while being compact for city driving and parking.

Pretty vague brief... but the "if you were single, no kids..." element sent me off down a wistful thinking rabbit hole.

I'd probably be looking at the likes of a Legacy Spec B, Audi S4 Avant, Volvo V70R... ie a quick yet fairly understated estate car, they generally tick a decent amount of boxes to coin the phrase. Need something that'd cope with swallowing a decent sized mountain bike.

The attractiveness to the opposite sex doesn't come in to it... if that's a factor in said females decision making, you'd probably be a happier life remaining single.
