Hi all, I’m thinking of getting a PS3. When it comes to a quick arcade blast with my daughter, she loves playing Tekken 3 on the PS1 classic and is really the only game she wants to play come game time.

We’ve played it about a million times now and I fancy a change, but given all Tekken games follow the same/similar mechanics and characters I reckon she’ll enjoy these newer versions as well.

PS3 seems to offer the most options in terms of Tekken games, so thinking of buying one.

I’ve discounted PS2 as too old now and discounted PS4 as only one Tekken game is available.

My knowledge of PlayStation expires at PS2, so have a few questions if you can help please?

Im looking at buying a PS3 Slim from Cex or similar, so it’ll have a warranty. Not the super slim as don’t want top loader and not the regular one as it’s just too massive and fugly.

Questions please if you could be so kind…

1. Does the PS3 store the games on its hard drive for faster loading, or do you have to swap the discs and have old school loading times?

2. Will the games still work without internet connectivity? I don’t want any subscription based products, so I won’t be attempting PlayStation networks and all that. I just want to buy and play the game I purchased.

3. Do PS4 controllers work with PS3. Thinking so I can buy some brand new ones rather than battered used items.

4. Anything else worth knowing?

5. Does it play Blu Ray and DVD? I think it does, but is it a faff with nasty navigation, or is it nice and streamlined?

Thanks!

I used to love Tekken 1-3 on the PS1. My brother and I used to get very competitive!

I can't comment about the PS3, but I know my nephew plays Tekken 7 on a rather old PC using my old PS1 controllers plugged into a USB adapter.

1. If you buy a physical game and put the disc in the drive it will install necessary files on to the internal HDD. You will still need to put the disc in and compared to modern stuff like PS5 or a modern laptop/pc the load times will be slower than ideal. But you can still enjoy the experience for sure. I have a few PS3s

2. If you want to play locally, just you and whom ever is in the room, you won't need an internet connection. Like modern systems, many PS3 games on disc will have an update available for downloading via internet (you don't need to pay for it). Many times it will be worth letting it search for the download (triangle on the game and check for updates).

3.

It’ll work hook with cable/Bluetooth just keep in mind it won’t work for some games:

Connect the controller and console with the USB cable and power both on.

Open the Settings menu, then go to "Accessory Settings."

Click on "Manage Bluetooth Devices."

Select "Register New Device" by pressing "X" on the controller.

Click on "Start Scanning," and then disconnect the cable from the PS4 controller.

Hold the "PS" and "Share" buttons on the controller, and when the lights on the controller start flashing, plug the cable back into it.

Highlight "Wireless Controller" on the screen and click on it.

4. Nothing really else. Your CEX idea is a fine one as it comes with the 24 month warranty. They won't give you a knackered PS3 controller so I wouldn't write the controller off before trying it. Obv a PS4 is a more moden and better controller if you have access to it. I think your choice of a PS3 slim is a good one. I have a fat original backwards compatible model as well as a couple of slims and the slims are just more modern and run quieter, so they are better option for PS3 games IMO.

If you can think of any other questions feel free to ask. Cheers

PS3 was the worst console I've had, still got mine in the loft. My PS3 used to overheat all the time, had it sent back for repair twice and they said it was fine, used to have to place it next to an open window.

PS1/PS2 were decent, I moved to Xbox after that.

The fat PS3 had issues and most people that buy them now delid and repaste them. You can also run custom fan software/curves to keep them cool. Is that the model you are mentioning?

The slim model (I've owned mine since the slim was launched in late 2012) I have still works exactly as you would hope and it's never been opened and used for hundreds of hours of skyrim and dark souls and all the rest.

It was also my blu ray player and media centre. I love the ps3 era. Interesting difference in experience.

Yeh mines the fat one. I've still got my original PS1, PS2 (still in use) and PS3.

I recently got my Slim PS3 out of the loft and it’s working just fine. Plenty of games are still really good fun though first person shooters feel a little dated. Plenty of cheap hardware and software available.

you can play these Tekken games on PS5

PS3 is 19 years old, unless you are some kind of videogame hipster (with requisite beard, beard oil and single gear bike) I can't see the point?

Agree with the PS5 comments, unless you have no intention of playing anything else?

Other option is a PS emulator on the PC if that's possible for you? That's how I've been playing PS2 games lately.

Thanks all for the replies, really appreciated.

PS5 isn’t what I’m looking for, it’s a huge console, expensive, and we’ll only ever play Tekken. We also have a Switch for modern games but it’s hardly ever used. So we’d not get the value from PS5.

I can get a PS3 from Cex for less than £100, and I’ve just found a disk with two of the Tekken games on it (plus Soul Calibre) for £15. Add to that the console will also play Tekken 3 and blu rays and dvds, meaning I won’t need to buy a specific player for those either.

So for what I’ll be using it for, I think we might have a winner! I’ll update once we’ve finished redecorating and have got the new TV and furnature installed as to what I ended up with! smile

I don't see any issue with your plan. It's a relatively low investment and you can sell it for not that much less than you buy it for. I'd get a 320gb slim unboxed for £100 from cex and your game for £15 and off you go. You will need a second controller for your two player fighting games. Other option is just buy one from gumtree. You can ask to see it working before you take it, that might save you around £40 to £50. But obv comes with some added risk.

I don't have beard oil or single gear bike but I have a few PS3s. I was playing "Katamari Forever" with my youngest daughter today on PS3. Great fun.

let us know how you get on.
