Gatwick Airport Parking/Drop Off
Discussion
On Saturday evening after dark my car exited the long stay carpark where it had been for 1 week.
It turned left as it has to to head out.
The signage is far from clear and ended up going through the drop off zone which was deserted, the car never stopped and no one exited or entered the car.
I am waiting to see if as the registered keeper I receive a PCN.
If I do I intend to contest.
Has anyone else experienced this.

Are you talking about the South Terminal long stay, if so, I did exactly the same thing and drove straight through instead of taking the exit road to the right. I called them the next day and explained my mistake, they said something like there is a grace period for errors like this and I didn't get anything else from them. I told them my make & model of my car and the approx. time, which they confirmed. It turned left as it has to to head out.

You should be fine.
Heathrow tried doing this to me as the Terminal 5 signs were a little confusing and I missed the meet and greet sign and ended up driving through the drop off. They want their £7.50 worth of flesh, even though I hadn't actually stopped, but I called and explained I'd done the loop to get back into the car park, with a copy of the meet and greet booking and they waived it.
I did something pretty similar at Heathrow. I paid it anyway to avoid any issues and then messaged them via a chat system saying I had evidence I parked at the short stay and had made an error.
They checked some records which must have flagged I had no tine to have dropped someone off, and refunded me.
Was very quick and easy.

The point surely has to be why on earth are we the gormless British paying for drop off anyway!!
Because when they started doing it, we DID rebel, we dropped off in the petrol station near by. Then our lovely Government allowed the operators to fine anyone for stopping in the petrol station who was not refuelling, so, then we started dropping off down the road, then our lovely government allowed them to "red route" ALL the surrounding roads. At one point people were dropping off near the motorway I believe. What are we supposed to do?
One thing I do know, you can park at the long stay for up to 2 hours free. You need to use the bus to the terminal, but its there if you need it.

I agree - they have just put a price on your convenience. As it is something that the airport can control, and therefore sell. What are we supposed to do?

Simply put I happily never fly, I loath airports, one step above motorway services. I am not a holidaymaker and I am not keen on flying, but now and then you do want to help people and give them lifts, I find this money for anything attitude of modern Britain utterly vile and repugnant. It is pure and simple greed, there is no other valid reason for it. SO ,much so in Luton they had to redesign the drop off points and provide several "runways" to ease congestion for the amounts of people now desperate to pay this nonsense.

I'm pretty certain there is signage on gantries, there is signage in the verge and there are painted markings in each lane.
What more should they do to enhance their inadequate signage?
The first gantry is after the point of no return. What more should they do to enhance their inadequate signage?
There are 2 verge signs, on the right hand verge of 3 lanes, the first is very close before the junction the second is immediately after it. The top line says M23 and is 20% of the sign, the next line is the same size and says SERVICES, under those 2 and taking up 60% of the sign is Hilton Hotel. All it needed to say was EXIT.
The Road markings only talk about parking and drop off.
None of the signs are illuminated and only the overhead gantry can not be obscured by other vehicles.

This is how it looks when quiet in good light.
Note the car on the left going the wrong way up the one way.
At this point you have about 100m to the turning and your first and only useable warning sign is 50m ahead of you.

Which appears to be more than sufficient for a massive majority of visitors to the airport. There are 2 verge signs, on the right hand verge of 3 lanes, the first is very close before the junction the second is immediately after it.
