Recently moved to a new flat and on local roads Cadent are clearly have a program of gas work.

The work always follows the same pattern which I do find odd, 10-14 days traffic lights, often on a 3 or 4 way junction, bit of work gets done day 1 an then very little for the rest of the time the lights and work stuff is there until the last day or next to last day when it all gets finished. So for 10 or so days NOTHING whatsoever gets done.

Now the point is, that has happened now 4 or 5 times near me, and followed the same pattern every time. If it is that predictable, surely they can do the work in a more efficient way? Surely they are paying daily for the lights to be there and paying highways or the council daily for the roadworks to be there?

Would it not benefit them to do stuff quicker and more efficiently? Does every other contractor involved ALWAYS take nearly a fortnight to be available? I am sure there must be a reason why not.

It was the same past us recently. I assumed they were working in various areas at the same time and hopping between sites.

That possibly explains it, does seem oddly organised that every piece of work seems to take the same amount of time!! Regardless of what they do!

Had similar near us a while back, dug multiple holes with lights etc but not much apparent activity. Followed the line of works one day and they were actually moleing new pipe along the whole stretch. The extra holes were actually for inspection as the pipe came through or were they seemed to join pipe at various times.

Lack of activity can sometimes be an illusion whilst they complete a section?

We've had this with broadband/ fibre.
Day 1 - dig holes and leave. Team 1.
Day 2 - sit in van for hours and occasionally run cables. Team 2.
Day 10 - order job lot of tarmac and put down. Team 3

For the 10 days there is blocked pavements, fallen over cones and barriers, traffic lights and roads half blocked.

Return on day 30 when your discover the connections were not made properly, so return to day 1...

Gas main works require venting and purging, I'm led to believe. They could fill the hole in, and open it up again a few days later for access, but imagine the extra cost of that.
