My wife’s passport runs out on 9th September.
We are flying to Malta 30th April returning 7thMay. Will this be a problem.

Malta is in the Schengen area, so should require min 3 months left on passport. You should be ok as I understand it.

(But I have never been to Malta so I wouldn't take my world for it if I were in your shoes!)

ETA, I renewed my passport recently and it only took 10 days from application to arrival. So there is time to renew before you go, even if that was a fluke and your wife's takes, say, 3 weeks.

Check also the passports valid from date, it it's before 9th September 2015 it means you were issued with a passport that is valid for over 10 years (which used to be possible up to a few months) unfortunately this extra time is not recognised by Schengen.

Very much this. I had just enough time on my 10 year passport for a trip to Poland, just. I thought I'd just get another passport when I returned. After checking the valid from date on advice from a friend, it turned out I would have fallen foul of this. I ended up doing an expensive last minute passport application where I had to drive to Durham for the day to pick it up.

Same here, did the post office thing last month where they take your photo and fill in the form for you. 8 days.

Surely makes sense for the OP to renew now to be on the safe side.

AND MY WIFE’S. It’s valid from Dec’ 2014 !!! It’s no good to use it. So I’ve paid the extra for a 1 week fast track, just to be on the safe side.
Done all the online stuff, got an appointment at the Newport office, ( easy drive for us ), next week.
