Im going to be doing a day trip in from the Caen area and I think I prefer the flexibility of driving to just outside and getting the train in.

Is St Germain En Faye easy enough or any other options?

St Germain en laye?

20 klm into Paris.
The drive from Caen to there is around the same time as if you did the whole distance by train. So not much in it.

I’ve only used Google to take a look.

Yes, I think I'd get more flexibility driving as the longer train is limited to I assume exact times.

I think it'll be a park at St Germain.
