Discussion
Hi all, i know this has probably been done before but considering the current 911 market and with the addition of the 997, with around 25k to spend would you go 993 or 996? certainly residuals seem to favour 993 (last air cooled the reason? RMS?) What is servicing like on a 993 annually (id use specialists)? any thoughts/experiences?

Drive them.
They are very different cars, one will feel right to you.
The 993 certainly has the better build quality, but then again even the newest examples are 8 years old.
Edit: Major 60k service at Camtune on my 993C2 was about £700. No other expenses other than consumables as yet.

Cheers for that. Mate (now gone to Oz) had a C4 993 and loved it, he also said annual service/running costs arent too bad at specialists. Clutch was his only major cost which he got done at specialist for half OPC price. 993 does have nicer exterior style and noise but 996 has nicer interior and i believe 'nicer' to drive. i will have to go for a spin... :-)
As said, take a drive in both.
I ran a 1998 996 C2 for 12 months & loved it, no major expenses. The 993 will probably cost more to run but not by much if you use specialists. The 996 was designed to reduce running costs, it’s easier to work on (so less labour costs)
What swung it for me was that I couldn’t live with the 993 interior, plus the 996 is a “safer” car, airbags everywhere, safer handling, faster than a 993 & less of a handful than the 993 for the average driver. It’s just a more modern designed car all round which as a daily drive appealed to me.
Get a 996 inspected by an OPC & put a warranty on it & the RMS isn’t an issue. Apart from the RMS (& that has been over hyped) there is not much else to worry about.

Much depends on what you want the car for.....what kind of journeys etc.
If you still cant decide after driving them both then think about whether you want a truly hansome car from any angle,(993) or a car that kind of mingles into the surroundings and goes un-noticed (996)
993 is quirky, a lot more fun and depreciation proof but a 996 generally faster and safer and more common and more plasticy and blander and well boring....but good for doing a long journey with ease.
The dicision is yours, as they say

993 can get a bit tiresome, say compared to a Golf mk4, on city commutes and long motorway journeys. Otherwise it's 'old-fashioned' ergonomics / character makes for a great drivers car. Try both, you'll know straight away which one's for you. OPC service for 993 ~£300 this year - say about 50% more than a Golf.

I use my 993tt to drive 000's miles across Europe each summer - no problem whatsoever, much nicer than my Boxster S (same interior as 996) for same type of driving

I agree with Silver, the 993 dash is much more attractive than the 996's, particularly at night. You soon learn the location of the switches, then having them scattered around is a benefit.
If you are tall (6'2'' or over) the 993 is much better.
In the looks from the outside comparison, the is no contest.

ie when its dark & you can't see it !
First time I have heard anyone sing the praises of the 993 dashboard ! I am sure its screwed together ver nice indeed, but its an ergonomic mess.

But there is something about a big feck off rev counter, the dial of which came off an old grandfather clock, staring back at you at 12 o clock. No fancy typefaces, just big numbers and a big needle like the hands on Magnum PIs chunky wristwatch.

One of the reasons I like the 993 compared to my Boxster S is the interior, particularly the dash. Th Boxster interior reminded me of my old MR2 (K reg) which was ok but very cloned.
Depends whether you like the classic 5 dials and hoodge rev counter right in the middle. Ergonomics aren't great, but it's unmistakebly porsche. Reminds me of dodgy 70's films.. le mans not porn
The floor hindged pedals are great for heel & toe, plus the rod gearchange is much more precise than later cable changes imho. As is a throttle cable rather than dbw on later 996s.
It's really a personal thing, you'll have to try them.
To me a 993C2 is much more involving with more feedback (and noise), than a cooking 996/997S. At some stage may look for a MK1 GT3 for this reason,
