Making Tax Digital MTD income tax self employed
Discussion
With the 2026 income tax MTD for self employed looming it looks to be a headache waiting to happen.
I am assuming we will still pay the tax due twice per year?
It makes a lot of planning quite hard as you do not know how the rest of the year will go. I guess it will just speed up the process to a quarterly lifecycle.

are you talking about VAT or just your corporation tax?
Neither. MTD came to VAT a while ago. It is now coming to the average self employed sole trader in 2026 and they will have to do a return every 1/4 and file electronic records. (According to a number of accountants). So this is pure income tax for the self employed sole trader. From what I can see it will be a 1/4ly return but pay tax as normal.
Huge thread already running for a number of years following the whole sorry saga.
