Basically the mechanism has destroyed itself. Handle off, suitable square bar in and it just spins with lots of grinding noises and it doesnt unlock.

Is it just a case of taking out the sealed units and flexing the uPVC enough to jimmy it open?

Fortunately, the company that made the windows is only 5 minutes away and they have a helpful trade counter but I need to get it apart first.

Any obvious and potentially less destructive method I should know about?

Remove the handles and lock barrel, then the gearbox comes out with the vertical side strip, you need to get it open though!

You can try to deglaze it and see if it allows you to bend it off the keepers. You will be very lucky if it works. You might have to cut the sash out and get the company to make you a new one.
