Exactly. It’s only recently that the ICAO mandated a move to solid state for CVR and FDRs

Was it not invented during WW2? Think the brits and the yanks used it, don’t know who invented it though

I think they predate WW2. Early dictaphones used wire recording.

A 1930s wire recorder.



The Germans invented magnetic tape and they were using reel to reel tape recorders during WW2. This one was in use in a wartime radio station.
