OH’s birthday. We have 4-5 days from the 7th May, closest airport is Geneva. Driving is an option but I can’t really think of anywhere we haven’t been within a reasonable distance.

GVA website shows Tbilisi as an option which is somewhere we’ve looked at previously and handily she won’t need a visa.

Looking for other ideas though, anything considered, perhaps an event or festival maybe that I can anchor the trip around. Anywhere or anything considered.

Tbilisi - and indeed Georgia - is a lovely place to visit. But I have some colleagues familiar with that part of the world who tell me things are a little 'edgy' there at the moment, politically. Nothing violent but lots of protest and discontent.

I've not been for a while but Baku is a really interesting city.

If that type of thing floats your boat, Lake Ohrid in Macedonia is very nice. Albania's worth a look; Tirana, Vlora, Saranda are well worth a visit. Cyprus you've probably done but how about the north? Very different to the south and May is a great time to visit there.

This list of events is from last year, but many will be annual. Might help you with your planning.

Have you been to Slovenia? It’s beautiful and by early May the weather should be good. It’s worth spending a couple of days in Ljubljana and then visiting Lake Bled.

Yes we’ve been a few times - bled, soca valley and Ljubljana. Great country, there and Istria are hidden gems.

Heavy edit as I’ve just been informed she has to be in London on 15th May but is free from the afternoon of the 8th.

So thinking it’s the perfect opportunity to visit UK, which weirdly has me more interested than the European alternatives.

But not London, she needs to sample the delights of the norf!

Thinking start in Manchester which is easy for both of us to fly to and, more importantly, arrive at the same time. 2 nights there for shopping, eating and seeing friends then loop up to the lakes/dales/moors and back down to put her on a train to London from either Leeds or York. My parents live between the 2 so I’ll spend a couple days there before heading down myself.

So totally different and perhaps redundant thread as I have more ideas than days to fit them in.

I guess where to stay in the lakes/dales/moors is still a valid question. Properly nice hotels are surprisingly expensive tbh and Airbnb offerings looks a bit st. So any help here would be welcome, plus any recent intel on things we can eat / see / hike up and wow at in the area.

Seoul — or Korea in general — is a fantastic destination. If you book flights in advance, prices are quite manageable. There's so much to see and do, with affordable options and excellent service throughout the city.
