Good value used estate car recommendations

Hi all, I'm looking for an estate care under £5000 that's low tax (so prob diesel) and cheap to maintain. Not too bothered about bells and whistles, reliability and decent boot size more important. Something that would last for next 5 years ideally. Any advice?

I've been running a 66 reg Seat Leon for the last 5 years. 1.2 petrol (turbo?). Goes fine, plenty of room, decent rear legroom. Currently on 84000 miles and still feels good with no rattles and squeaks. I've replaced the clutch and discs all round. Apart from that just consumables, none of which are expensive. I'll keep it until it dies at this rate.

ETA it'll probably need a timing belt soon, I must look that up!

I'd go japanese - Honda Accord Tourer or Toyota Avensis.
They have huge boots, good economy and the diesels will go on forever. Avoid DPF ones if you can, as that is just another headache and potential expense.

They do not, however, have track day handling or tyre-shredding power.

If value is the top priority I'd recommend an Astra estate or a Megane estate.

Both unloved in the used market, and both much better than their reputation suggests.

Japanese stuff is reliable but more expensive to buy.

Anything will need some maintenance, the more proactive the better for an easy life - that said, Mondeos are pretty well liked (just avoid powershift), and absolutely cavernous!

Low mileage 2011/2012 examples are everywhere at that price, or if you don't mind more miles, there are newer ones banging around as well.

I have one of these - utterly reliable and fantastic build quality. It doesn't like being driven fast but for cruising around on family duties it's a very nice place to sit.

If you can find a petrol it will go on forever, if you get a diesel maybe check if the DPF has been replaced, they tend to fail at 15 years / 150,000 miles and are £3k to replace.

A D3/4 Volvo V60 would be one of my preferred options or either a Honda Accord Tourer, as previously mentioned or a Civic Tourer.

These are good for many miles. Parts are cheap and robust.

You can get a 212 in budget, too, but a run out 211, whilst more dated, is a robust motor and if you are not bothered about bells n whistles is worth a look.

Diesels are not cheap to maintain, they have a much higher risk of £1000+ bills than a petrol. And in a few years they will be impossible to sell because no-one wants a dirty unrefined rattlebox that can’t be driven in cities (where most of car buyers live).

Something like a simple petrol 1.6 focus estate is the best bet for real-life low ownership costs.
