Very hard to get car into any gear, a few are just about possible with some force! Pumping the clutch seemed to help. Assumed this meant the problem was hydraulic so replaced the master and slave cylinders. The problem is now worse if anything. Gears can be selected with engine off so probably not the linkage?

Sounds like clutch springs but why would pumping have helped before and why would it be worse with new master and slave cylinders?

Thanks for any advice

Thanks. What would the symptoms be? There was no slippage on the clutch when driving.

It was just a thought. I once had a Nissan 200SX with those symptoms and that's what I found. The clutch plate had fallen apart and locked the engine and flywheel together so effectively, despite pressing the clutch, it didn't release.

If the problem has changed with anything you've done (you say it has got worse), then that's a confirmation that you're in the right place... perhaps the hydraulics are not fully bled, try pressure bleeding it.

Might it have something similar to this in the hydraulics ?

Seller states "It isn't uncommon for these to leak slightly causing the car to be hard to get into gear. " Posted in a similar thread earlier this month IIRC?.

Has this issue suddenly developed or gradually becomes worse over time? A worn out clutch can cause this, without necessarily slipping. As the friction material wears and the diaphragm spring relaxes to take up the wear forming a more conical shape, it means that for a given motion at the slave cylinder the clutch pressure plate moves less which can cause the clutch to drag. This typically also causes the clutch to feel heavier.
