I have a question for someone who has just got his licence back after suffering a one-off seizure.

He was told by the doctors he couldn't drive, informed DVLA, and had to be re-assessed by doctors assuming no further seizures within the year, which there wasn't, so he applied for & got his licence back.

Unfortunately he seems to have lost his C1 entitlement in the process.

Before he goes "all-in" with DVLA etc, can anyone tell me if this is the norm?

This isn't my area of specialism, but I lost a category (H tracked vehicles) when renewing my photocard. A not so quick phone call to DVLA and it was reinstated once they looked up the test pass details for that category.

Not quite the same circumstances, but thanks for that insight.

Is the new licence medically restricted, i.e. has to be renewed every x years?

I lost C1 when mine became medically restricted for type 1 diabetes, although that might be specific to the condition.

Appears to be five years seizure free if a one off.

Ten if not a one off.

Not an expert on epilepsy but certainly speak with other C1 holders ie 7.5 ton truck drivers. Yes, its normal not to get C1 automatically back if you get B back, but don't know what the criteria to eventually get C1 back is, or whether you'd need to take a (C1 driving) test to get it back.

Epilepsy is not the same I don't think, as that is a specific diagnosis that is responsive to drugs in many cases.

Thanks for that insight, I will pass that on, if anyone has any more info I will see if it helps him.

I lost my vocational classes, (PSV and HGV1 in old speak) at my first licence renewal past age 70.

Could claim it back, but I would need a medical and a current CPC!

So, OP, could age be the issue here?

No, that was my first thought as I know that happens at 70, but he is only just coming up to 60.

Wasn’t there someone on here who lost their HGV licence for medical reasons a few years ago and had real struggles to get it back.

I lost my C1 and D1 entitlements when I had to declare my Type 2 diabetes.

I also got a letter explaining that this was due to me being at risk of becoming incapacitated, due to my condition, even though I have never had any incapacity since I was diagnosed.

I would assume it's the same here, due to the chance that another seizure could occur.

No problem, I will pass your experience on, thanks.

Hi

Similar happened to me back in the early 2000s, so appreciate things may have changed, but I had automatically had C1 due to passing my test in 1989.

Had a one off seizure at work, told by Consultant to stop driving for a year, told DVLA etc and when I got my licence back C1 had been removed.

Never really questioned it to be honest, my guess is due to changes in 1997 I lost the auto entitlement.
