Importing a classic car from Malta

Not helpful, but when I was 19, the Dad of the my friend offered us a weeks holiday in Malta at his villa, if we drove his 500SE back to the UK. He gave us money for fuel, food and hotels, but we slept in the car to save money for booze and clubs in Italy.
I imagine a traditional car transporter a la Lizard Logistics or EM Rogers will be very expensive for this distance. Maybe you could offset the cost by driving it on the ferry to the Italian mainland?

All the obvious, sensible answers have already been suggested, but you could potentially ferry-hop to sonewhere like Barcelona, drive across Spain and then get the ferry from Santander. I have no idea how much that would cost, but it might be a more interesting trip than a lot of autoroutes across mainland Europe with less stress on the car.

Apologies for the late reply…and I can’t really comment as to the best/cheapest way to import the car BUT…
in 1975 (having just completed my 1st year of a Uni course) my new girlfriend and I drove her dad’s 3 yo Bedford Beagle (Vauxhall HA van/estate car) to their villa in Malta. This was pre-mobile phone/internet era. As far as I can remember, the only planning was a pre-booked ferry across the channel and a short discussion with the AA about ferries to Malta. As a result it took us less than a week to arrive in Syracuse (Sicily) just in time to watch the ferry leave for Malta. Undaunted I thought we could take the next one in an hour or so only to discover that it would be 2 days hence. Also I realised that we could have boarded the ferry in Reggio rather than attempt to race the very same boat to Syracuse (doh!).I was absolutely knackered by the time we docked in Valletta (at 1:30 am) and just signed forms to state that we would leave with the car within 4 weeks. We left it to her uncle to resolve the issue of permanent import the next day (which might have involved a substantial cash donation). Clearly it worked cos it was still being used by villa occupants 2 years later when we “popped” over in her brand new Triumph Spitfire as part of a European road trip.
As said, I’ve no idea on the best/cheapest solution but my suggestion would be to get some European Breakdown cover and have an adventure.
