My regular post for suggestions please .
We are early retired take regular 3 to 5 night trips home and Europe, trying to do one a month .
I have been to Wales maybe twice in 60 years , wife once so Wales it is .
Travelling by car from Sussex, fine to drive any distance.
Where should we go and stay ? Typical day nice breakfast drive to something, light lunch drive on have a walk somewhere. Drive to accommodation, evening meal somewhere and repeat.
Not looking for fancy hotels but want it to be nice and in a good spot , usually pay around £150 a night as a guide

We did a week in Saundersfoot during Covid and had a really good time. Nice little town with good bars & restaurants along with a great beach, You also have Tenby just down the road - there's a nice coastal walk between the two towns. We walked one way, had a nice meal and a few (too many) drinks and got a taxi back

Don't know if you'd consider self-catering but we stayed here in Tenby once or twice a year for several years. It's within the town walls, has off-street parking, a wonderful view to Caldey island and though just a short walk to the town centre is peaceful at night:

I would recommend the Lake Vyrnwy area, you can stay on the hotel over looking the lake and its a lovely 11 mile walk on a quiet road.
From there you can drive across a lovely little road to Bala where there are more places to stay and its also a nice base.
Another lovely place with plenty of places to stay along with loads of walks in Betws y coed.

Stayed here a fortnight ago with a car club for the weekend - perfectly nice and in a lovely spot.

We love this area of Wales and have at least 4 weekends there per year in the Abersoch, Criccieth, Porthmadog area. We tend to pitch up in the NW of Wales, Porthmadog, Criccieth, Conwy areas. Snowdonia (as it used to be called) on the doorstep, plenty to do with beaches, castles, walks and so on.
Whilst it’s a good distance from where you are, it’s well worth visiting.

- Twr Mawr is an easy walk along a beautiful beach to a small island with old lighthouse
- Drive around Snowdonia
- Llyn Idwal is an easy walk up and around the lake
- Llynnau mymbyr for a roadside stop and walk down to the bridge to get views of Snowdon over the lake (very good for sunrise)
- Llyn Peninsula
There’s a lot to see and do and you do not need to hike up mountains unless you want to.

Ditto the North Wales recommendations - I've spent an inordinate amount of time in the area, and can wholeheartedly recommend the Conwy Valley, the Llyn Peninsula, Ynys Mon or the foothills of Yr Wyddfa (formerly Snowdonia).
Llanberis is a bit grey but a good base for the mountains, Conwy is picturesque and friendly (if a nightmare to navigate in a car) and the area in general is breathtaking!
I'm lucky enough to be working on Ynys Mon for the next couple of years, with bedroom windows overlooking the mountain range
