I did search the forums but surprisingly no threads came up.

This gadget appeared on my FB feed. Is it any use or just a worthless gimmick?

Reads as if it's dependent on other users updating the information. Is that very different from Apple Maps and other systems?

Not have a screen, as far as I can see. So for those who don't know how to turn their phone display off.

I'd hoped it was self-contained but it needs a smartphone with data so no use to me.

On PAYG and mostly switched off in a cupboard. I have all the internet and data I need here at home, I don't feel the need to cart it about with me.

I recently bought a TomTom 6100 for a one-off French trip so the problem got solved that way smile

Currently in France in a supecar/fast car group and Waze is a bloody godsend, and an important factor is being able to see WHERE the cameras or police are, as over here, a lot of the fixed cameras have to be marked as "average speed camera zones" for whatever reason - which is quite a big zone. You'd have to slow down for a good mile at ttimes until you actually see the camera without a screen to look at. PLUS, a lot of the newer cameras are onthe ground and largely hidden until you are on top of them

Not to mention you are already using it as your navigation!

Are you not afraid of the seizure law? I wouldn't speed one of my own cars in France due to the 50km/h over making it be seized. I mean sure you could stick to less than 50km/h over but in that case why even bother taking a nice car...

Shame as I have various old (unpaid) French camera invoices from the good ole days

Most of the time we have stayed within the over 50kph margin, with obvious overtakes the exception, and some twisties fun in the forests. There are a LOT of very open roads where you can see for miles ahead and zero chance of being surprised. Plus, Waze never missed a camera, or the one single copper radar manned trap on a motorway entry slip. I'll not deny we saw big numbers on a few occasions but as said, they'd have had to be lying hidden in short grass!

On the lond dull Paeges we sat at around 90mph all day long (144kph, so 34 over. Never saw any cops on the paeges, and rare to see a camera either.

Been a super trip. Heading back to Calais in a few hours. Currently near Reims.

You can have a LOT of fun within a "50 over bracket", with a few well timed exceptions. The really big numbers don't float y boat, nor any of the group bar my mate with the Maclaren GT who is still itching to try an autobahn.

14 over, surely? Unless it's raining, or you are towing.

I did myself a crib sheet before a trip last year: €68 up to 20kph over, €135 for 20-50kph over, €1500 for 50+. Doing 180+ wasn't really on the cards, I just wanted to remind myself how expensive it could be!

So, you may as well cruise at either a GPS-measured 130 for no risk, a GPS-measured 149 for mild risk, or a GPS-measured 179 if you are feeling fancy.

NB I wouldn't suggest printing it out and sticking it in view, i suspect Les flics would not be amused.
