Hello.

Potentially looking for a S1 and would appreciate some advice. Long story short, I had a series to fast cars (Subaru, bmwM135i, golf’s, lotus etc) but I got busy / skint / old and combined it all into one with my family car which is a Japanese import 5.0 v8 discovery (love it) Got the wife a Kia ev mainly as it had a 7 year warranty and was cheap to run. Had it 7 months and it is great (for an ev!) but one major issue is that is makes my wife and son car sick! Looking at going back to normal car. Two options, boring normal car or older special car. I am assuming low depreciation on an Audi S1 and I have always fancied one. Coupe of questions. What is it like on a motorway at 70? (How many revs in 6th at 70) how are general running’s costs? (Assume 40mpg on a long? 30 all round?) what is the ride like (I live in Edinburgh with terrible roads!) what is the smallest wheels you can run (with more sidewall).

Many thanks

cheers paul

It's mechanically a MK2 TTS with a MK7 Golf GTI engine.

They're OK on the motorway - not as good as a bigger car, but more pleasant than a Mini, 500 etc. 3k at 80? I'm struggling to remember. Whenever I'm in an S1 I tend to take the long way home to play on B roads.

They have damper control as standard and are reasonably compliant. 215/40/17 is standard. Brakes are tiny so you could probably fit a 16 on but might look a bit silly.

Lots of younger owners who take no care of them. Lots of crap mods. Lots with poor maintenance records. Lots with very basic specification. Corrosion protection wasn't amazing underneath - rarely causes a problem (until you need to undo a bolt) but they can look a bit crap from below if they've been on salty roads, left dirty, lived by the sea etc.

Amazing cars but tricky to find a genuinely decent one.

3k revs at 80 sounds better than my M135i as that seemed quite short geared from memory. i have driven a normal A1 and it did seem very grown up/ big car like for it's size.

yes your right. a lot of them seem to be highly modified and that is not what i am looking for. I bought a modified gold edition 30 years ago and it kinda sucked for every day driving.

My land rover is a Japanese import and insanely clean underneath so i might look at getting an import and keeping it nice.

Thanks for the advice.

what do you have now out of interest.

cheers Paul

I used to have one as my only car, including using it for business. They are fine on the motorway and will easily do 40mpg if sensible. Mine was an ex Audi demo car, so had every option including supersport seats, pano roof, 2 tone paint etc. I miss the car, unfortunately some scrotes liked it too and broke into our house for the keys and used it in several armed robberies.
