Zenvo unveils world's most powerful roadgoing V12

British-built quad turbo'd 'Mjolner' revs to almost 10 and makes 1,250hp - before electrical assistance

Just when it seemed like the days of truly jaw-dropping hypercars were done, the resurgence came. Bugatti made a new V16, McLaren created a real-life Vision Gran Turismo car (with a new V10), the Aston Valkyrie reached the road and Zenvo debuted the Aurora.  All are bedroom poster-worthy. Now we know a little more about the incoming Danish demon, with its monster V12 now revealed to the world.

Now, quad-turbo 12 cylinders don’t come around all that often - the Bugatti EB110 seems the most obvious example. It lends itself to big power, with all that capacity and so much forced induction assistance, and that’s exactly what Zenvo will offer with the Mjølner: they reckon 1,267hp (1,250bhp) is possible, before a 600hp electric boost. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, the redline will be 9,800rpm and - get this - the Mjølner has been designed ‘specifically for the road’. It is said to be compliant with current and future emissions regs across the world, which is some achievement for a 6.6-litre engine from a niche manufacturer.

Aiding the engine in that will be Mahle’s Jet Ignition system. The V12 will actually be built by Mahle Powertrain in Northampton (the UK is becoming the place to go for exotic engines right now), and the Jet Ignition tech has been in development for more than a decade; it means the Mjølner can operate under ‘Lambda1’ conditions, which will be essential for future emissions tests. This is not just going to be some crazy track engine that requires a team to keep it running.

There’ll be more coming, too, as the V12 is the first Zenvo engine built on a new modular architecture. Meaning, presumably, something smaller and slightly less extreme (perhaps with just two turbos, for example) could be derived from Mjølner. Or, Zenvo being Zenvo, a V16 spun off it. Either way, this seems a long-term commitment to combustion.

Understandably, the company suggests that the Aurora programme has taken a ‘significant step forward’ with the completion of an engine. It added that development continues ‘at pace’ - the last thing you’d want in this current hotbed of hypercar activity is to be gazumped by something even wilder.

Zenvo’s Chairman Jens Sverdrup said: “Sound and visceral drama is what Aurora will be all about, and the engine is a vital element in this, which we will turn up to 11. At Zenvo, we are a team of passionate, genuine ‘car guys’, and it is not every day that a V12 engine is born, so it is a very proud moment and very exciting to finally showcase Mjølner. The fact it is the world’s most powerful roadcar engine was not something we set out to achieve, but is a result of us pushing what we know is possible. This is a hugely important milestone, and the next step will see – and hear! – it come to life, and it has been designed to deliver at every level, which shows the progress we continue to make.” That dyno video can’t come soon enough.

It is hardly bad news but!!!

Where does it end, Power corrupts?

When is not enough too much?

600 BHP is all you need for the road? I'd rather go lighter with more flexibility than this.

Did anyone other than certain paid influencers even buy Zenvo's previous offering??

That looks hugely complex. Given F1 makers struggled with reliable high revving V12 engines with a 1-2 hour life requirement, Im not sure this will be suitable for road use.

BUT, I bet it makes a great noise and if I am in a position to buy a £4M supercar, I would want something suitable expensive, exclusive and powerful to power it.

With other well established brands cannot really see the market for this car, considering they have only made around 35 cars since they were formed, I would say the anticipated planned 100 sales is optimistic to say the least.

You do know this is a pistonheads forum right!.....Honestly, who doesn't want to hear about a fantastically powerful engine?

Not to mention the transmission is being developed by another UK company..Ricardo.

Further details on the engine can be found here https://automotivepowertrain.mydigitalpublication....

Dunno about that, the amount of EV lovies on here. Should be renamed Batteryheads.

Back in the Max power days, soenone would have tried to shoehorn this into a Golf.

From a technical exercise point of view I am always intrigued by new engine designs being unveiled, but I struggle to understand how an engine of this size (physically as well as swept capacity) and complexity really moves the game on?

The game?? Its over mate, we should just celebrate these ICE units while we can, and this looks proper special

Pick one of these engines up cheaply from a salvaged crash and stick it in an Interceptor smile

Roadgoing? Without being in a car? How does it manage that then?

Mjølner, cool name for an engine. And now I'm going to have this stuck in my head all day. biggrin

Amon Amarth, now that's a band I've not listened to in a while... It's playing now, thanks for that!

I agree with the EV comment, I am tired of the EV content on this site.

Maybe someone needs to start a new site with no EV content!

There's a shopping list of reasons why a comparison to V12 F1 engines is naive. Those engines were revving much higher, up to 17,000rpm. They were designed to be as light and as powerful as possible because they were race engines, and in those days you put a new engine in the car for every race, could replace it freely if it blew up in practice, etc. They were literally designed to last 2 hours and run at the absolute limit.

That's completely different to a modern engine designed with all sorts of tools, technology (in their design and manufacture), and materials, that weren't available to F1 manufacturers at the time.
Contrast this engine with current F1 engines instead - they're 1.6 litre turbos revving to 15,000rpm, and they need to last on average 6 race weekends. Getting a 6.6 litre engine to reliably put out this power at lower revs with modern technology is not easy, but it's nowhere near as hard as 30 year old F1 tech might suggest.

On the Aurora itself I saw both versions at FoS last year and they're stunning things. I hope that the lucky 100 people getting to buy one will actually use them as intended!
