After a great time with a Golf Mk8 GTI which I thoroughly enjoyed last year, I was hoping that another short term deal might come long for the summer..

(aforementioned GTI)

Luckily I got a call on Monday with an opportunity for a Mk 8.5 Golf R in Lapiz Blue, yes please, and this arrived on Thursday..

First impressions are great, quiet, comfortable with a bit more go than the GTI but it doesn't feel 'fast' (my other car has 365bhp, FWD, manual and is a few hunded kilos lighter) but certainly has the poke that I maybe thought the GTI was lacking.

Nice, I have one on order.

Does yours have DCC?

No, no DCC. Would have been something I would order if I was paying my own money (just for drift mode!) done 1500 jokes in 2 weeks, really enjoying the car.

How does the Mk8.5 build quality compare to the Mk8? My brief drive in a Mk8.5 suggests it's slightly better built and more refined, with the infotainment being a big improvement.

That’s a lot of punchlines..

Mk 8.5 is better build than Mk 8 and seems to have better paint quality. Big difference in drivability - feels much quicker than the Mk 8 R mostly due to the engine /turbo change from Mk 8. Ride is better - less harsh and even better if you have the forged Warmenau wheels which are appreciably lighter than the standard wheels. DCC seems better tuned in the Mk8.5 R than the Mk 8. PP gives you Individual mode plus the Special modes etc. In indvidual mode you can set DCC to the softest setting which with our UK roads is a bonus. Akrapovich exhaust provides improved sound. Infotainment is improved and much quicker responding than on Mk8. Overall a very significant improvement on the Mk8.

Drift mode is nothing to do with DCC - Drift mode comes with Performance Pack where you get extra driving modes. such as Special,Individual Nurburgring etc

Just watch out for the very common DSG fault everyone is moaning about on the VWROC forum where in manual mode you loose the ability to change gears. There’s a lot of. Ars being affected and there’s no cure yet. VW are apparently working on it.
I watched Misha take one stock car from Atomic Tuning on the Ring and gearbox played up.

There’s quite a few pages on the Gremlins for 8.5 but nowhere the MK8R.

It’s probably software with engine and gearbox ECU’s.

I’m holding off a bit longer on 8.5 and tucking away my 3 door 7R for my lad.
