996 turbo incoming, a couple of questions
Discussion
I have taken the plunge and swapped the 993 for a 2002 996 Turbo which should arrive next week, a couple of questions if anybody is able to help.
I was having a dilemma 996 GT3 v 996 Turbo, so on the way to look at the Turbo I stopped off to take a last look at a GT3, for my use I’m fairly sure I’ve made the right decision, but I did notice that the GT3 gearchange was (to use a cliche) like a rifle bolt, where as the turbo wasn’t, is it possible to replicate the GT3 gearchange in the Turbo?
The other thing, which I’m sure I’ll get used to, it would be nice if the comfort seats were lower, it sort of feels like you are sitting over the steering wheel rather than behind it, it must feel really awkward if you are tall, is there a solution?
TIA

Ultimate seat solution (other colours are available) :I was having a dilemma 996 GT3 v 996 Turbo, so on the way to look at the Turbo I stopped off to take a last look at a GT3, for my use I’m fairly sure I’ve made the right decision, but I did notice that the GT3 gearchange was (to use a cliche) like a rifle bolt, where as the turbo wasn’t, is it possible to replicate the GT3 gearchange in the Turbo?

Alternatively, find a pair of 997 seats, either hardback Sports seats, or the standard items, both have more adjustment and enable you to sit lower.
Gearshift : Buy a new standard 997 shift assembly (don’t fall for buying the 997.2 GT3/RS/4.0RS item, it’s rubbish and now ridiculously overpriced) instead upgrade the new stock 997 shifter, either by using the Function First kit or I can supply you a Cup upgrade kit.
Both will make for a slightly shorter, more precise, rifle-bolt shift action.

As with most things 996 GT3, the problem with replicating another car is knowing with what it had on it-owners love them because they're so adjustable and modifications are common.
Mine for instance has a 997 shifter with GT2 cables which I love and has that rifle bolt action folk talk about but it can be tricky to hit second on a 3rd > 2nd downshift (you can over reach into the reverse gate).

Does the car have the fully electric seats? My turbo had the fully electric seats and they sat about an inch higher than the standard seats in my 996 C4.
Tbh all 996 seats (perhaps excluding the gt3 seats) are terrible. I fitted standard 9x7 seats in mine and it was a revelation. Any 9x7 911, Cayman, boxster seats are straight bolt in. Just switch the seatbelt bracket from the 996 seats and a small wiring hack to work.
As for the gearshift. 997 selector or one of the cheap short shifters with Alex's bushes from uk911 forum.

To add to Slippy's response, the 997 shifter will fit into the 996 and is a popular upgrade as it was 10% shorter throw as standard. If you can find a 997 short shift, which was a common factory option, that's shorter still.
What gives the 'rifle-bolt' feel of the GT3 was metal bushings. If you come to remove the old shifter you'll see your one has plastic bushings and a plastic yoke (like a ball and socket joint). There are aftermarket upgrades to change these to metal (Function First being one but they're in US) so the slop fore/aft and left/right is removed, so the shifter is much more direct. A worthwhile upgrade.
BTW, Turbo beats GT3 for me as well. But we're in a minority.

There’s a hell of an echo in here What gives the 'rifle-bolt' feel of the GT3 was metal bushings. All excellent points, but I’d concentrate on the shifter housing and it’s components before the changing cables or the cable ends.
If the car still has the original shifter in it, it’s 20 years old at least, and thus well past its best.

Out of interest the GT3 was surely more money than the Turbo? They seem to be on the up.
TX.
Probably double! In reality, not worth it for most people.TX.

Hi
Lovely car, i would say that it’s the same (similar) as mine. ??.
do you know what the spoiler is on the back. doesn’t look standard turbo. I’m asking as it looks like I’m going to have to find a solution to my broken spoiler.
