I love me wedge. A lot
After just 1 month of ownership, I'm hooked - I don't even like my TT any more!

Just one question though, I am getting an average of 100 miles to every tank of petrol (£25). I'm running on standard 95 octane fuel but am being crippled by how much my driving is now costing me!

Is 16mpg normal or have I got serious problems?

My car is a standard 1987 350i

Cheers,
L33.

If my quick calc. is right, that works out at c. 17mpg, which, unless you're booting it everywhere and not getting into top gear, seems a bit on the low side if its a standard 350. Sure its not got a 4.6 lurking under the bonnet?

The MOT emisions test will tell you a lot - were these ok last time?

Its generally only a good idea to run ordinary unleaded if the ignition timing has been retarded to suit it - otherwise you may find it prone to pinking.

The fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate, and as I'm sure you know, the tanks take forever to fill, so £25 worth is only about half the theoretical total capacity.

Time for a tune up maybe?

Enjoy.

Thanks number 7.
As for not booting it everywhere, I do like using my right foot as it brings music to my ears (and everyone else’s ears who happens to be within a 2 miles radius ) but not using it all the time.

Definitely time for a tune up!

Can anyone recommend anyone around Birmingham who doesn't charge the earth?

I know a guy in Nuneaton.

PS sure its not the gauge? Run it dry with a spare couple of cans in the boot?

My gauge is awful so tend to fill up on 1/4 minimum. But pretty sure there is at least a half left

Pah, you're not trying

When my ECU was on the blink I got 95 miles... on a tankful.

My 390SE normally averages 18 mpg, on a cruise it will see mid-20s (which surprised me!); at the moment I haven't got the new injection set up correctly and it did 35 miles on twelve quids'-worth of 95RON.

It's quite easy to get an RV8 into single figures if you try hard enough (IIRC Steve Heath's sprinting 5.2 does 4 mpg on the track )

Think I worked mine out at 15 odd on the M way, 18 on another long run?. Goes down drastically on a raid to the hills. Trips planned around fuel station stops not sheep stops

Glad I haven't got Steve's mpg.

I reckon my 390 does about 15 if I'm careful (which I'm not... much )

I think the problem is getting serious if the petrolstations run out of petrol.

About 5 years ago i did a weeks driving with my "flat cap on" in the 350 and recorded a massive 29mpg average.
I just do not want to know what the SEAC does though.

I've been logging mine since I got it by filling to the brim each time and recording the distance travelled (OK so I'm anorakish). Over three years it averages 24.2 mpg, used mostly for long distance trips (over 50 miles). On the odd occassions when I've pootled around town, it drops to 20 mpg, and cruising on decent A & B roads it can get up to 27 mpg. As noted in other threads, if I've played silly b*gg*rs, it drops to 17 mpg.

Unless you're using it to get two miles to work each day followed by blasting it round the countryside at the weekend, it sounds as though you need a tune up. I find the cheapest option is to take it to a 4X4 independent. They are used to working on Range Rovers, and don't charge the earth. Not much use for anything else than engine work though.

I'm getting between 15 and 23mpg out of mine, don't think I've recorded any higher. Although the run down to BBWF surprised me in it's economy.

Sounds as though there is some carpet underneath the accelerator pedal preventing you from pushing it all the way down - 16mpg is far too good!

On me drive to Sweden this year, 2100 miles in a FHC 350i, the average was 24.9 MPG (I know, I'm such a geek). The curious thing is the extended stints on the Autobahn at sustained >> 120 MPH (indicated) driving I got close to 30 MPG, and around town and country driving it drops to around 15 MPG! So I guess you need to drive faster!

The Odometer was spot on, as I measured exactly 1.0 miles between the pillars of the Storbaelt suspension bridge.

Previous owner of my car reported that at sustained 100 mph cruise up the motorway from Glasgow to Edinburgh the car was more economical that at 80.

Storebaelt is a scary thing isn't it! I went over about 6 months after it opened; it was £21 to cross IIRC...
Several hundred feet straight down onto a passing tanker...

I get around 20-25 mpg from my 390 - more (up to 30) on a long run and much less ( less than 10) round the track.

I once had a VDP EFi with a standard RV8 engine, it had a consumption display on it and I once got this down to 0.7 mpg booting it up a hill. Two tons of car with an auto-box with kick-down!

DavidY was in the passenger seat - I'm sure he remembers it.

Not normal at all. Mine does 10-12mpg on a 'steady' motorway run and is 4mpg on track. You're not trying hard enough

Going up to Oulton, I was averaging £30 of fuel an hour

My 390 runs a lower compression ratio than standard - I think I worked it out to be 9.3:1.
This is because it has standard Rangey pistons instead of the original flat-top Omegas, the valve pockets were added which takes a bit off the normal 9.35:1 CR of a 4L Rangey. Hence it's probably happier on 95RON than yours would be

my 400se is definately in to single figures most of the time, best would be about 15mpg if I am very gentle, ie, not very often!!!
