Me and my sibling were discussing my father’s retirement and something me could all buy him. He’s coming to the end of his retirement and we thought about buying him a car for his retirement. We thought about pricing and agreed a budget of around 5 grand.

Some criteria:

Comfortable
Automatic
High Specification

Having a look on Autotrader;

BMW 5 Series GT
Mercedes E350 AG
Jaguar XF Portfolio
Mercedes R Class
Volvo V70 SE LUX

We’ve got a pot to put money in for any big bills etc. we just thought we could treat him.

Something with 2 seats, maybe an MX5 so he can't give his children/grandchildren lifts everywhere.

Or something with a V8 to cheer him up?

2 seater is no good. It’s not very practical. A V8 could be a possibility.

not sure how old the car can be.

a bit above budget, but those are very comfy

or one like this

for the coolness factor, looks and sound one of these. Unfortunately there is no car in budget.

there is one that is close re price on autotrader

a mobility scooter?

You did say he is coming to the END of retirement not about to finish work and retire.

Is this what you mean?

Why buy him a car? Can't he take care of himself?

Why what’s wrong with one of them?

Is that not what retirement is. The end of your working life. He’s perfectly capable of taking care of himself. But we thought it would be a nice surprise. I’m not sure you’re able to grasp the concept behind gifting.

What kind of cars has he had before?

Does he already have a car he uses day to day?

I'm thinking something a bit older maybe, especially if it's just a weekend car. My dad always wanted a Range Rover but never got around to it.

So by "end" you mean START?

I guess technically it's at the front end but an odd way of putting it.

"Gifting"? Hate the word, so American but yes I do understand what it means.

When my father retired he had a massive lump sum to draw on so why would I "gift" him anything? Plus I didn't really like him.

Seriously: You must be so very kind. Well done OP.

Have you ever seen one?

£5k get a lexus, maybe an SC as I think they're cool in a jag XK8 sort of way. Does he really want to be fannying about getting a £5k merc or beemer fixed every month?

Eg, this looks immaculate from photos

Theres a reason the oldies either drive a Jazz or a Lexus, and that's cos they dont want to spend half of the rest of their life waiting for jaguar to fix their f pace again and take their kids inheritance.

At the moment he’s got a Nissan Leaf. It was okay for his commute to work. I did think possibly a RR. I know a friend that owns a LR parts company. He’s very well off.

If he owned a lexus parts company he'd be earning under minimum wage and claiming UC. Says it all.

Indeed the OP seems to have gone to the same school of comprehension, reading and literacy as the Donald

I think you should save your money and buy yourself a house, instead of that motorhome you were dreaming about the other day.
Your dad/parents arnt prepared to help you set up home so why would you wish to buy him a toy ?

Love it!

When my dad retired (aged 55) he was considerably better off than me or my brother. He's enjoyed a gold plated NHS pension for the last 28 years and it's still more than I earn. Funny thing is, although he has always loved cars and could easily afford a nice one he drives a Citroen Picasso. The Range Rover he always wanted was too big to go in the garage at the flat he downsized too years ago. Weird how these things go.

If I were you I'd certainly check if he actually wants a 5k luxury cat rather than surprising him with it.

Lexus is a good shout. Probably something like a GS. I think that SC convertible looks awful but each to their own.

Is it your father who is well off? if that is the case, then well intended, spending £5k on a car is something that he would appreciate as a retirement gift.

I would have been appreciative of a gift from my children although wouldn’t expect or want them to spend £5k on me.Maybe pay for a overnight stay in a nice hotel with a meal would have been the limit.

If they insisted on a car, then an MX5 would be my choice!

OP not sure if you are a fantasist or not but instead of buying a luxury shed for £5k why not just get dad a memorable classic car experience/rental for a few days?
