993 roof power
Discussion
Hi Peeps,
After my great victory of finding the 20 year old battery drain (the bally retrofit stereo all along), great woes have befallen me.
Woe the first is that messing about with the electrics has caused my alarm to randomly go off, about once every 24-48 hours. Now, my neighbour’s bedroom is next to my garage so this is rather fun at 4am. Obviously I disconnected the battery rather than risk this becoming a habit.
By far greater woe the second is that I suddenly have no power to my convertible roof in this lovely weather. I have read the two good articles on this, Renlist and 911 UK, which suggest the popular fixes are handbrake copper thingy not engaging to confirm it’s on or control box cold solders have cracked. Before I embark on another clueless odyssey I just wanted to ask you sparky geniuses whether the fact that I do hear a brief electrical click of something momentarily engaging when I press top down button means something. Specific question yes but I am hoping it might point diagnosticly to a particular problem and will prevent me unnecessarily fiddling with things that don’t need to be fiddled with.
Its the same electrical click I get with my failed power seats but that’s a different story…
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Silly question Two - is the battery earth connection good and clean? Are you still on the original earth strap?
(if you've been chasing a battery drain all this time, I imagine that's already perfect/new)
Are you able to measure voltages as you switch things on/off?
I still have not done that OC! Thanks for reminder!(if you've been chasing a battery drain all this time, I imagine that's already perfect/new)

On the subject of earths, the stereo earth, (green wire?) was attached to the stereo unit frame which I am pretty sure does not count as properly earthed. Should it not be touching the chassis? I really don’t want to take the dash off and pulling wires about will most likely lead me to more problems so I have left it!
I seem to have stopped the alarm problem by simply removing the stereo…. Only one way to test it unfortunately and that is to risk the neighbours wrath!!

Are you anywhere near Haslemere?
I see you are in Surrey and I have fixed just about every item on my 993 cab roof.
If you want to call in here I can talk you through it and we can do some checks.
What a nice offer! Thanks, that would be great! I’m in Great Bookham. I see you are in Surrey and I have fixed just about every item on my 993 cab roof.

The electrics are a bit confused as I had an analogue/coaxial stereo to phone cable fitted 10 years ago. Since my recent (initially successful) messing about with the electrics, and obsession with finding the perfect 90s stereo, I currently just have a bunch of wires sticking out of the dash (as removing the new old unit it seems to solve the alarm going off thing)! I am hoping it is a usual hood problem and not some electrical gremlin I have caused, hidden deep within the dash!!
By the by, I know my left hood motor has always been running slow and even though Porsche Brooklands was desperate to fix it and relieve me of lots of cash, it has always opened and closed fine as long as you give it a “special nudge”.
On the subject of pulling out after market wiring I cannot resist showcasing the wiring nest and garbage I pulled from my car a couple of years ago. It took about a week and comprises the H&P alarm, immobiliser, key fob auto roof/window closing device, tracker and under bonnet stereo amp.
Why the original owner specced all this rubbish is beyond me. It was a bit nerve wracking cutting some wires and reconnecting the original loom and hoping everything would still work at the end.
I sleep better knowing that I won't be stranded in Europe with a failed alarm/immobiliser.

Amazing job! I have exactly that paranoia about my electrics! Why the original owner specced all this rubbish is beyond me. It was a bit nerve wracking cutting some wires and reconnecting the original loom and hoping everything would still work at the end.

Have a look at the stereo chassis holder. Is there a (I think) brown wire connected to it?I seem to have stopped the alarm problem by simply removing the stereo…. Only one way to test it unfortunately and that is to risk the neighbours wrath!!
This was {on the early 993 cars at least) the anti theft for the H&P system and set off the alarm if someone tried to nick the stereo. It had come detached when I’d pulled the original stereo and so didn’t see it when I installed the new one.
I’d never had sorted it but the great all knowing ‘Pope’ told me about it when I’d asked on here back in the day and low and behold it was detached and lay inside the dashboard
On mine it was well known for setting the alarm off for no good reason and especially in the middle of the night. Reconnected it and never had an issue again.
