PETROL OR HYBRID
Discussion
I swapped to a Hybrid 2 1/2 years ago and not looking back.
Absolutely no interest with full EV as things stand at the moment so the hybrid fits my personal circumstances perfectly.
2.0l Corolla GR Sport HB. Get 60mpg out of it when driven correctly and maximising on energy harvesting.
£20k will buy you a fairly new example and will still fall into the 10 year warranty if you use Toyota servicing.
I have 3 Toyotas and they have all been fantastic cars.

I'd choose the car rather than how it's powered.
Personally I feel that hybrids are just a stop gap until everything is fully electric. I've always preferred a manual gearbox so for now a petrol or mild hybrid is my choice. If there was a car I really liked and it was a proper hybrid I'd give it a look but they still need petrol to run them which to me makes little sense. Also they seem to command a premium with people hedging their bets. With used EVs now being much more affordable I'd go down that route instead.

Thanks folks
ideally I am looking for a used car which is less than 36 months old
How far away are the friends that this car will only be used to visit?ideally I am looking for a used car which is less than 36 months old
What are your priorities? Economy? Performance? Good handling?
What type of car do you want? Hatchback, MPV, SUV, saloon?
How long do you want to keep it for?
What brands do you want to look at?
You understand of course, that you’ve asked a very broad question…..
A big factor would be whether the OP just wants transport, or a more interesting car.
As reliable and economical transport you wouldn't go far wrong with a Toyota of some sort (of which almost all models are now either hybrids or EVs). However if there are other factors which also come into play, such as driving enjoyment or having the right badge to impress the neighbours you might want to consider other manufacturers
It's also worth taking into account where the nearest dealer is, as if everything else is equal between two cars, having to go for a long trip each time a car needs servicing can be a bit tedious. In a big city you're likely to have all the mainstream manufacturers catered for, but in more provincial areas some makes can be much more hassle than others. For example, where I live the nearest Seat and Skoda dealer is about an hours drive away but other fairly equivalent makes such as Kia, Toyota and Peugeot have dealerships within 20 minutes.

Hi Folks
I'm thinking of buying a new car, but can't decide whether to go for a petrol or hybrid car.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated
Thank You
Be careful what you choose. I had a expensive high end hybrid SUV as a courtesy car for a week, and it proved to be the worst of both worlds.I'm thinking of buying a new car, but can't decide whether to go for a petrol or hybrid car.

Thank You
It was almost useless as a pure EV because it had a pitiful range of not much more than 100 miles. It had diabolical performance and fuel consumption as an ICEV, because its petrol motor was struggling to move the near two ton weight, owing to its two (petrol and electric motors) its two fuel systems (Battery and petrol) and its large size, needed to contain its two drive trains two fuel systems and the passengers, and their luggage.
You need to consider what mode the vehicle will be used in most, Petrol or electric. and then choose the one that gives the best overall figures in `that' mode.

My father-in-law has one of these although in white. Absolutely no interest with full EV as things stand at the moment so the hybrid fits my personal circumstances perfectly.

I've only been out in it once but I was very impressed, I also think its a great looking car and is kept garaged.
He's retired and only really makes a twice weekly trip to the golf club, I have my eyes on it for the future....

A plug in hybrid is the best of both worlds, if its done well. I'd get one of them.
More often than not it's worst of both. Some exceptions. Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
