For many years, I only slowed down in variable limits when a reduced limit was enforced. Never received any nasty mail, until this morning.

A NIP has arrived for 84 in a 70 on the M1 from a HADECS camera.

When did this change, has anyone else been caught recently?

yes

A14 huntingdon/cambridge section going north in August 24 like you, I thought they were only working when the redcued limit shown but i got a prize notiifcation of 81 - think of the children rolleyes

now slow and cruise at 79 till the section is passed and look out of the camera before the HADECS if i'm going a little quick

Surely not, I can’t have been getting lucky for all these years. Must have covered well over 100,000 miles since they first appeared.

The one I have been caught by I drive past 5 times a week, many times much faster than 84 as well!

So what speed do you normally drive at on the motorway?, it does not need to be a "smart" motorway to be caught speeding, it would be rather foolish to exceed 80mph and not get spotted speeding, google speed limit plus ten percent.
The speed limit on motorways has been 70 mph since a temporary trial period in 1965 and then made permanent in 1967.

As above. The police for that area have always been able to enforce the NSL if they want to, some do, some don't, some do sometimes, it's down to them.

If you're blasting through speed cameras anywhere above the posted speed limit you're gambling, whether thats motorway at NSL or 40, A roads or wherever.

I think they have always been active even when NSL applies. I can recall someone writing to Honest John in the Telegraph about 20 years ago, indignant that they had been caught on camera doing 105mph on the variable section of the M25 when they were displaying NSL. Even Honest John thought 50% over the limit was pushing things a bit too far!

I thought the cameras were always working regardless of the posted limit. That must be why I have avoided getting a NIP!

Somewhere on the A14 around the Bury St Edmunds area there's a fine piece of 50mph temp limit. It's about 400 yards long on an otherwise 70mph road, and has apparently no reason to exist. Most cars ignore it. Who thinks of these things and why do they leave it there?

Always assume a speed camera will enforce the limit of the road you’re driving on.

Some aren’t switched on (see also Red Light Cameras (‘s?). I suspect it varies from area to area.

I use the M62 three or four times a week, I see pretty much at least one person a week getting done by them (they’re bloody bright at night when you’re on the opposite carriageway) and quite often there is no limit on the gantry.

Never. No one can produce a ticket for less than +10% + 2mph.

The yellow ones on the left side of the gantries have been able to get you at 79mph for about 10-15 years. I pretty much sit at 78mph past the cameras and never had a ticket.

That sounds like there's an issue with the barrier in that area, and speeds are reduced to mitigate any impact turning into a bigger failure, although you could always email the authority to get an actual answer and perhaps even a timeframe for rectification rather than guesswork and frustration
As with a lot of roadworks, and work in general just because something isn't obvious, doesn't mean there's no reason for it.
As seen on other threads, you can't win. Trying to tell people why something is happening leads seemingly to as many people whinging about it.

It's up to the area police force. AFAIK the overwhelming majority if not all of them enforce it.

When I was 18 I got a big shock with a flash on the M25 at whatever vmax of a 1.6 T reg ford focus is. In my case it wasn't because I didn't think they flashed at all when it was NSL, but because I thought the cameras were only on the gantries that had a camera sign. Fortunately back then they needed to have film. It led me to take a lot more interest in the mechanics of speed enforcement in this country... there is a load of helpful information on forums like this and in the public domain and any self respecting speeder should really be reading it

I make up for it by doing 160 in the bits without cameras. Safe as houses thumbup
