it depends on several things.
1. mac or pc
2. buying or "aquiring"
3. high end or not

for basic editing/importing/exporting. both xp and mac have free stuff.

xp has moviemaker, mac has imovie. both good at basic editing.

the next level on the pc, is pinnacle studio. very good, pretty cheap and stable.

on the mac, i would suggest fiinalcut pro for the high end.

i am leaving out premiere for a reason, it is really buggy and unstable, on the mac and the pc.

hope this helps.

Hi Jody
Thanks for your help - much appreciated.

in answer to your questions i would say the following :

1. PC Using Windows XP

2. Buying

3. Medium to High End.

What would you suggest in this situation ?

I dont know about the latest Premiere version but I never had much trouble with the old premiere versions. You get the odd crash but then I also used Final cut pro and it would crash just as often. As long as you dont push them too hard it should be ok.

Sony Vegas (i think thats what it is called) is another one for PC, I haven't used it but other people have said that it is good so might be worth a look.

Review of Sony Vegas

Adobe Premiere Elements (entry level version)

Abode Premire Pro

Those are probably the 'main' players atm, others to consider.

Pinnacle Studio 9

Ulead Video Studio 8

Adobe After Effects 6.5

I use Adobe's creative suite (CS) family. Premier Pro for capture and editing. Adobe Audition for soundtrack (Dolby 5.1 surround). After Effects for special FX and some motion stuff. Adobe Encore (1.5) for authoring the DVD.

It's top of the line for prosumer, but does have a prosumer price. You also need to have a fairly high end system and lots of storage to receive the benefits.

after effects is excellent, but more like photoshop for video.

you can do most of the type of editing with pinnacle. it's a reasonably easy learning curve, and does pretty much most of what premiere does at a fraction of the cost.

i haven't used the sony software, but find most of their software (sonicstage and others v.poor)

the adobe stuff in general is very good, but have found lots of problems with premiere on a regular basis.

try some of the free trials of the software and see what you like.
