Free range chickens and pheasant

Hi

We have recently acquired 4 hens which we are letting free range around the place. However we are having a slight problem with 1 or maybe 2 wild male pheasant.

They are going into the chicken run, through the small chicken sized door in the wall and into the chicken house which is in a barn. This morning there was a stand off between the 4 chickens and a pheasant in the chicken house, and if they got close to each other the chickens attacked it.

Does anybody have any tips for deterring the pheasant? I have tried chasing it away to frighten it and maybe the chickens pecking it this morning will help, but I think the lure of easy food will see him come back.

If you haven't it's worth checking the gov website on a regular basis and the defra map to see if you're within an area where there is a housing order. It's ever changing at the moment, so we've subscribed to the text updates. Make sure you're registered as a keeper and following the guidelines, there are penalties if you're reported. We're in a housing zone and have added additional netting to the coup to prevent wild birds entering and we can't let them roam around the allotment. The housing zone is getting larger each week.

Thanks, we are registered to and not currently subject to a housing order.

We can close the chickens in their run, which is netted top and sides, but of course letting them roam free about the places means that the run is open.

Shooting season, but it's actually 1st October for pheasant
