Unlike the usual Hollywood dross, this actually makes you use your brain. It's an excellent film and makes very clear sense once you get it (several viewings usually required!) - at which point you'll find it both deeply sad but very uplifting.
Some may call it pretentious, but bully for them - they should watch it again and then they may begin to see what it's really about.

My son has just watched this for his ALevel Media Studies.... so we've got a copy kicking around - I may have to watch it now to see what you're all banging on about!
My son thinks (according to the director's commentary) it's about divine intervention and the cut scenes make it less obvious....

Bought the directors cut for about 8 quid from Amazon and it now makes much more sense. It does slow down the film a lot though.
I'm still not sure how people can understand the original film without either reading around it or guessing about the parts that are missing.
So, to enlighten me - could anyone (who enjoyed the film and understands it having just watched the cut version) explain why Donnie is in hysterics right before he gets squished by a jet engine?
Oh, and to answer the original question - I didn't understand it despite watching the original film 4-5 times. I had various theories, none of which stood up to much scrutiny.

the original cut is very very difficult to properly understand. the directors cut explains a lot more and it is definitely worth watching.
it is about time travel AND the existence of god, but that doesnt really become very apparent until you have eitehr watched a directors commentary or the directors cut.
