Suv not much choice?

We're looking to change our 2023 a3 petrol hybrid.

This time I fancy an suv we have around £40k to spend and want something with a bit of poke, we don't do huge mileage and the a3 hybrid has suited our short journeys charging overnight even the small 25 Mile range was enough.


It's either a bmw x3 or new Tiguan which looks pretty cool black.

Anything else I should consider that I'm missing ?

Loads of choice it's a popular segment. The Kuga is great lookin in my eyes. A mate has the tiguan is a lovely car.

I always thought the Porsche Macan hits the sweet spot of quality, comfort, performance, subtlety, etc. for a road biased small-to-mid-size SUV.

The Macan is most definitely not a small to mid size SUV - great car (we have a 2018 2.0 petrol) with great build quality and built to last but you understand the true girth when you try to park in a supermarket car park! Not a problem in parking but more a case of others being careless when opening doors.
What is strange is that it isn’t that big internally and rear leg room is poor for the size - the Cayenne is a better proposition but that is even bigger.

Mostly short journeys and you're already used to charging?

There's several smallish electric SUVs available with a reasonably amount of poke, eg Elroq, XC40/EX30, Kona, Nero/EV3 etc

If a hybrid suits your use due to short trips and you can charge at home then why not go full EV?

£25-30k will get you a 2-3 year old low mileage eTron 55 AUC from Audi. 410hp, 200+ miles of range, pennies to run.

And yes, I have just bought one myself for the same use case. It's fantastic.

I've recently gone from an XC40 plug-in hybrid, to a Kia EV3 GT Line S, £43k new.

The XC40, with 25 miles battery range, was my first "electric" car. Decent car, but I'd be wary of running one outside of dealer warranty.

The EV3 is just as refined as the (very good) XC40, has all the toys, and a 7 year warranty.

I did try a Volvo EX30, but it was not a comfortable car, just felt "unfinished".
