I am in No way religious , but I thought it was sad , the interventions to keep him alive when he was seriously ill went too far .

I pray that wisdom and good judgement may attend those tasked with selecting his successor.

I find it interesting that even in 2025, in a country with only a relatively small number of practising Catholics, this will almost certainly be covered to an enormous extent by the media and almost certainly will somehow be felt to be significant to many who don’t have much invested in religion at all.

I don’t know much about the guy. Hopefully he was a nice person. He held enormous clout and ran an organisation with remarkable power. I suspect I would disagree with him over very many things. Can’t say I’ll miss him or mourn him. Don’t imagine his passing will spark an existential debate about Catholicism or organised religion. If anything I suspect his passing will be a shot in the arm for Catholicism. At least for a while.

I just find organised religion, and the “glamour” of the papacy in particular mildly perplexing and interesting in that respect.

We watched His speech yesterday. I turned to the MIL and said "he'll be dead within the month" !! Citing a dear old friend (Vicar) who was terminally ill - he was hell bent (not literally I hope) to make it for a final Easter Sunday mass. RIP
