Not literally of course, they are sat in the corner of my living room and I'm looking at them now, but I can't find them via their usual IP addresses on the network.

The set up is a Virgin box, into which is plugged a TP link router used by the wireless devices. Previously there was a different device being used for the access point. I had to faff around with turning DCHP on and off on the router, and now have internet across all devices including the ones which have static IPs. Everything is working perfectly, with the exception that I seem to have changed the default IP addresses for the boxes (eg 192.168.1.1 etc).

So, what on earth have I done, and how do I find the IP addresses of the Virgin box and the router, so that I can get back into the settings menus.

In windows open a command prompt and type ipconfig, this should give you the default gateway, that is the address you need.

Perfect, thank you. So I can easily get into the Virgin box now, but is there a way to access the router? I can look a the connected devices and see one called "localhost" instead of a MAC address, but how to access the settings, or do I need to plug that in via Ethernet cable.

Or maybe I should just leave everything alone as it is working!

What I was originally wanting to do was put the Virgin box into "Modem mode" and let the router handle all the wireless traffic, but that caused some unknown issues, and it's now set up so the router is simply seen as an ethernet access point for a different network and there are 2 wireless networks, one from the Virgin box and one from the router.

Doesn't the tplink stuff have a default local dns entry that resolves to the device? That's how I remember it working; you didnt need to know the IP as the name would do it. Though does depend on DHCP being active & pointing DNS at/through the device.

It was when I started turning DHCP off in the TPLink router than I started having issues I think. That and putting the Virgin box into Modem Mode. At a guess DHCP was turned off on both devices??

Does the router have a mac address written on the label?

I assume the dhcp server is running on the virgin hub, if so go in to the list of clients on the hub and look for the mac address of the router. The ip address will be there.

Good thinking, it does, so I've now identified why device it is, but am still unable to connect (can't be reached/DNS error). According to the router you should be able to type in tplinkwifi.net and it will find itself, but that fails and trying to connect via the IP address gives a page not found error.

Unplug the router from the hub and plug the router directly into the lan on your pc, switch off any WiFi on the pc and you will probably be able to see the page. If not a factory reset may be the best answer then the default ip will be back on the router.

What exactly are you trying to achieve?

Is this a deco mesh system that you are trying to add to the virgin hub?

If so depending on the type the most resent virgin hubs are incapable of modem mode, you would be best to disconnect the deco, reset it to default, connect via the app to the deco, set as accesspoint mode, reconnect to the virgin hub and then turn off the virgin hubs wireless.

If your sure the virgin hub can work as a modem, then set it into modem mode before connecting the deco device then connect via the app & configure as a router.

Great question, and tbh not entirely sure.

However, by resetting the router, following some instructions provided here and on the internet elsewhere, everything is now sorted such that the Virgin hub is in modem mode and the TP Link router is doing the routing, and most importantly I can connect to both devices which I couldn't do before. I suspect I had disabled the DCHP server on the router and that was causing some problems.

If you can connect to the virgin hub via ip then your not in modem mode.

Why do you say so? It gave a different ip address to use once in modem mode. (192.168.100.1 vs 192.168.1.1 not in modem mode)

Please disregard, it’s the management network rather than the actual subnet.
