Last Christmas, Bloomberg reported that Apple was developing a proprietary doorbell camera. Do you think we’ll ever see it launched?

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-12...

The Verge said:
This doorbell camera joins a broader collection of rumors surrounding a renewed Apple push into the smart home that’s centered around Apple Intelligence. Those include another new smart home camera, a possible Apple-branded TV, and new smart home displays — one a simple iPad-like device that magnetically attaches to wall mounts or speaker bases, while another display sits on the end of a robotic arm attached to a larger base.

TBH it shouldn't be that difficult for them to develop the tech, it just depends on if people will pay the Apple tax when there are so many other options out for what is a very basic device. Also being developed with Apple Intelligence doesn't fill me with confidence that this will be anything other than another dumb doorbell.

A TV could just be an Apple monitor with an Apple TV built in.

We need to work out what Apple could bring to the party if they do do one... that's their usual MO, join late, but somehow do it better... so what is it that needs improving in the existing line up... that'll be the clue.

Answering that, I can't think there is much they can do to make it better except integrate it properly with their own stuff, but I doubt that'll sway the market.

would be nice if it was fully linked as a home security product, knew when you were home / asleep / out etc etc etc. linked to air tags the whole thing.

SmartThings already does this type of stuff and has been for years, wonder what can be done differently?

never even heard of it, so suspect just putting apple on it would be more than enough.

i use simplisafe for doorbell / alarm / sensors etc. Im sure there is a load more integration that can be done

I recently got a new Mac and experienced how incredible the wireless connection is between an iPhone and the Mac when used as a webcam. Crisp, high resolution and can see in the dark. If Apple built a doorbell camera with an iPhone camera and similar tech to link it to your phone, tablet or Mac, then it would be game changing. And it could use Lidar for motion detection. Of course being Apple, it would force you to use iCloud to store your clips and take more of your money.

Amazon and the like already link cameras (not even theirs) to your firestick, TV etc... And really camera res isn't bad on most doorbell cams. Thus I think it wouldn't be so much a game changed for the many people who already have doorbell cams, but would be good if you didn't.

I doon't know which doorbell cams you've been looking at, but the quality between Ring, Blink, Nest, Eufy and Apple's continuity camera is VAST. They are highly compressed blocky SD quality at best and continuity camera is broadcast quality full HD.
