A sporty car for my petrolhead 19 year old
Discussion
After 18 months with his 2009 Mini he is keen to get himself a new car, ideally something a little sporty.
He seems keen on a circa 2000 2.0 BMW Z3 but I am less so. He seems a little oblivious to the potential maintenance costs and knows best.
Anyway, I am trying to think of alternatives which will still come in under £5k but also give him what he is looking for but also maybe less old. Also reasonable on the insurance as he will only have 1 years no claims this coming June.
The added complication is he is off to Uni in September and so the car will be with us for most of the next year, and probably won't get driven that much other than when he is home. Also not garaged either, and thats where my Rover Mini is stored. Another reason why I feel such a purchase is not making much sense to me.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this really a good car and am I overthinking the ongoing costs? Are there better options that will appeal to his wishes for something more "modern classic"?
Thanks in advance

Why has nobody said MX5 yet?
OP knows it's the correct choice. For 5k you might even find one with all the welding and rust already taken care of....or a 2.5 z4 or the 2.0 z3 he mentioned, 5k shoululd find you a looked after one that's been well maintained that shouldn't really give you much grief. All three fairly easy to work on/cheap to fix and get parts for.

If he's not using it much and will be doing low mileage, why not go for something classic or retro and keep it covered when not in use. Something older. Opens up a whole world of interesting stuff.
my paternal over protection kicking in with anything too much older...I have a classic mini and its too small and no protection really for anything beyond little journeys...Craig-088m8 said:

And heartache
If I were a student I'd take my car with me to Uni. Why buy a car & leave it behind?
not allowed a car in year one...

)Who on earth can police that? (and why would they
