I'd be very surprised if you could pick up the phone and get one next week. How will they cope with the expected demand?

To risky for me

I'll build a titanium filled hybrid instead

Thing with crate lsx's is you never quite see the whole picture right off. Demand will be high for this unit because it's good but without an ecu it will have to be home mapped and a custom loom obtained. Where are the front end accessories and mounting brackets? How many people really want a dry sump set up? That will be changed. Basically $13'000 is just the starting point. Add on another $3'000 and you may have an engine to suit your installation. It's still got cast pistons so if you want bigger power are you going to keep them or change them? That's more cost plus a strip down, balance job and build up. That said, 500 odd hp should be enough for most people

I saw this about a CHIMAERA LS6, they also talked about LS7, here it is...
----------------------------------------------------
I guess we're spoiled over here when it comes to LS engines, they're everywhere. The really rare commodities here are the technically proficient people in LS Engine Packaging (ECU, harness, etc.) Mods and Tuning, that's my son-in-law's business.

Related to Dyno numbers, I just now saw dyno sheet of Tim Kerrigan's(Pres of Redline Oil) 2006 ZO6 with only 71 miles on it. 492 HP and 472 Ft/Lbs torque at the rear wheels!!!! They say the numbers will improve with more "break-in" miles!!!

The insider scoop here is that this new LS7 when cammed will show numbers in the 600 RWHP range!!!
------------------------------------------------------
Sounds good to me...

Boosted What do you not like about about the LS2 and LS7 Blocks ? Is there a history of liner failure ? Am interested in knowing more about any "weak links" these new gen 3 engines have....

Clive,

I think the poster is having a laugh at bullshit figures being claimed. Ls6's dont make that horsepower, it's cobblers. Do you think a ls7 will make 600 just like that, I don't and doubt you do either. It's already revving to 7k with the help of titanium rods and lightweight cast pistons, that's penny pinching! The potential is there but if it was easy power GM would have done it for us 512 hp is an achievement in it's own right.

As for the ls2 block, I don't like it, it's got defiencies. They siamesed the liners and raised the block floor so there's less coolant capacity. The water pump is cheap as well. The ls7 block also has problems despite all the work GM have put into it. Main concern is always the liners so for a max output engine the darton block is the way to go. It's no good GM spending loads of dosh on a block if the liners will fail or the pistons will crack. Liners on lsx engines are centrifugally formed. They are dense but thin, detonation will write off the block, I've seen it happen several times. They can't be rebored because of the thin liners.

Have a look at this link if it's still there.

www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3056755#post3056755

Basically, you need a good person for the mapping if you're doing something custom. For a max hp effort I wouldn't go with the ls7 or c5r block. That's why I became a darton agent. They're liners are 5mm thick and the ls1 block is stronger then the ls6 item. I have pics of gutted ls2 blocks so know what happened to the internals.

With "RedLine Oil" in the trans, diff, and engine, with mid-length tube headers and high-flow cats(!), no air cleaner, and 71 miles on the car, on the 22nd attempt, the LS7 made just over 492 rear-wheel HP (rwhp) and 472 ft/lbs. of torque (rwtq)...without any changes to the PCM/ECU.

The ECU was learning it's new environment. However, at worst case, there was 21 degrees of timing and 11.7 air-fuel ratio.

I have to agree with those that say 600rwhp/550rwtq will be smashed with a new, bigger bump-stick and rolling-road tune.

Drop some forged cans in there along with solid lifters and ...who knows!?! 8k RPM!?! In a 2,200# Ultima!?!

I've sent you mail. It depends on what you want. I can provide an ls7 type engine but in a darton block. I'd still use titanium rods, same crank, same heads, wet sump and one of my own inlet manifolds. I'd also fit forged pistons and total seals. Or you could go for a stock 427 with steel rods and an ordinary crank.

State-side, a Darton 427 LS1 (block only) is about $2,800. The 427 LS2 (dry-sleeve) is around $3,200.

There are a couple of good reasons mass-produced engine builders don't use forged pistons...oil consumption, piston slap when cold, noise. Although, you would think they could make an exception with the hand-built LS7. I won't be making any mods (except for a good tune) 'til I know how much power and acceleration (RPM) those cheap cast pistons can take.

Do you get the Block all preped at Darton, or do they just supply the sleeves ? if so where from ??

I'm going to price up a LSx Build and see how it compares to the money I have and how much I can get for the Present sent up I have.....

If Anyone's interseted in a Full On Old Iron unit then I can supply the following :-

Iron Eagle Little M Block Prepped for 4.125" Bore and 4" Stroke..
Scat light wieght Racing Crank (Fancy bow wieght ect)
Billet Oliver Rods (the Best)
JE Forged Pistons
Brodix Track 1 CNC Ported heads (complete)
Kinsler Fi System ( Manifolds Injectors Fuel rails Linkage Trumpets Etc )

By the way all this stuff is brand new never used and still in there boxes...

I Copied a friends engine basicaly and He has 649bhp and 606Lbs on Kinght Racing servies Dyno... and the cam was only a Flat tappet 240 @ .05" cam so with a roller there's more to come basicaly......

any offers ? not that I've made my mind up but I could be tempted....

I agree, the pistons must be up to the job otherwise they wouldn't be in there but I'm still surprised. The crowns and first ringland are quite thin. Emmissions is also a consideration. I think reciprocating weight was a major issue. They even wedged the little end of the conrod to save weight or maybe they were concerned with the ever rising cost of titanium! Probably both. Lsx development marches forwards

Darton makes the sleeves. Authorized companies perform the machining and installation.

Mike (Boosted1) gets his from THE VERY BEST SOURCE, so he would be an excellent contact for the Darton block.

THE SOURCE is a machine shop in southern California whose owner co-invented/co-patented the product/process. There are other authorized installers, but it is generally accepted that his are the best available. After all, he invented the thing.

Darton LS1's have been known to fail too.
I've heard of a couple LS7 Zo6's making in the 430-440 RWHP range.
Which would put em at about 650 on AS's engine dyno

well who says you need to go to 427? rapid motorsport are claming over 500rwbhp from the N/A 402 (strocked ls2) and a stock LS1 with a maggie, headers and tuning can make around 500rwbhp in the front of a vette!

also i not think there is any need to go for an iron LSX engine unless you are looking at over 1000bhp at the fly! there are several big turbocharged engines in the states (and AU) that are making near 1000bhp on ally blocks!

infact, take a look at www.capa.com.au in their LS1 tunning section! they have a creat motor with a vortech blower producing from 580-680KW (about 770-905bhp) for under 37K AU dollars (about £16K)!!

now that would be nice in the back of an ultima!!

also rapid have taken the LS2 out to 445cubic inch as well on darton dry liners! also some guys that sell dartons in the state say that wets are only nessasery for BIG power motors! but im still not that sure about them! why not just stroke a LS2????

thanks for the huge responce everyone! Chris.

PS. dont think jeggs will get the engines that quickly anyway! i think its nearly a year waiting list for the GM dealers to get thier hands on them! will try and keep you all posted anyway!

Were it my money I'd hold out for the quadruple side-draft ball bearing turbo. That'd be way cool.
