Adding people to a Whatsapp Group

I'm an admin for a Whatsapp Group for my running club.
I need to add some new members to the group, but when i click on the "+" to add members, it will only let me invite people in my phone's contact list. I don't really want to add 50+ new people to my contact if i can help it, so is there a way to add people to the group just using their phone number?

Can you not use the 'Invite via Link' option, copy that and send it out in a text (or email) to those people you want to join the group ?

When you go to add a new member, the link option should be at the bottom of the list of Contacts.
