It’s a weird mash up, definitely more action than horror, but it works very well, river dancing Irish vampires and all Great soundtrack. Owes a lot to From Dusk til Dawn I would say. Recommended. Same director as Creed and Black Panther

Watched it at the weekend. Didn’t know what to expect, other than something supernatural or horror related.
Very good film. Reminiscent of a Jordan Peele film, but Ryan Coogler is a better director.
As well as being entertaining, I think analysis of the themes and allegories will keep film students busy for a while.

Depends what you like. It is a REALLY good film, but it might not be to your taste.

Well I don't like Marvel films.

Let me throw in the movie the Green book. I also like the likes of JoJo Rabbit etc etc.

It’s not a film made to please a focus group. The messages about racism and cultural appropriation/assimilation are not subtle. It references a lot of other films without plagiarism. The final act goes full Hollywood action/horror.
It’s also very well made by a director who knows what he’s doing. Music and cinematography are as integral to the storytelling as the script and acting. The mixing of genre are handled really well.

About a third of the way through I thought “ah, it’s taken that idea from Dusk Till Dawn”. The difference is I would give DTD less than 5/10. I think Sinners is an infinitely more interesting film.

I think where it falls down is the editing. It stumbled and staggered. No flow.

At one point I thought they were going to do a dance off a la Fire Saga.

I walked out. It was awful. Such a great selection of actors let down in my opinion.

Well, there you go.
I don’t think I’ll see a better film this year.

I thought the second half was fantastic, first half was a bit slow for me.

I'm a massive fan of folk and blues which probably helped

It starts off slow and takes it's time getting to it.

It's all about the reveal and the final act.

I found the first part very watchable before I realised it was about vampires. Once it drops the first hints of what is to come, it elevated it. When it begins to merge horror, culture, music and politics, it does something very special.
As with Guillermo del Toro‘s best work, it’s a masterpiece, but it won’t appeal to everyone.

Basically, I thought it was brilliant, but I can see why some don’t like it.

I don't pay much attention to these awards anymore, just a load of mutual back slapping.

I tried to start watching this recently but the first 20mins didn't grab me so I turned it off. I had a feeling it was going to feature a lot of music that I probably wouldn't like. Maybe I ought to give it another go?

These days a film with Oscar nominations sets off the alarm bells. Normally one to avoid.
