Retirement planning advisor - any recommendations?
Discussion
Approaching the point where I feel we can pull the plug and retire but would like some help to sense check what we think we understand, and to fill in the gaps.
I've read enough to know we're not going to feel comfortable doing anything without at least an independent review, and possibly some guidance on how we can better make the most of our assets and be as tax efficient as possible.
Any recommendations for who we might consider using?
I've been impressed by James Shacks' YouTube videos. Has anyone had any experience of Nova Wealth, that he's a partner at? Given the exposure they must get through his YouTube there is very little about them online (and searching Nova on Pistonheads doesn't help).
Thanks!

If you are looking for financial planning, I'd start here. Thanks!

The CFP is considered the global gold standard in financial planning, and it should mean you have a decent financial plan built for you rather than someone just trying to sell you a product.
Once you have a handful of potential advisers, I would check their websites. Do they specialise in retirement planning or serve anyone?
Once you've narrowed that down, most will give you an hour of their time to see if you would be a good fit, but if you are just looking for one-off advice, I would save you money and invest in a book/decent software/some qualifications.
There's a poster on here called Derek Chevalier.
Never used him and not sure he wants people to know his company/website or if the rules allow it but I worked it out (god that sounds stalky
) but he's the sort of chap/approach where if I was in your shoes I think I would be reaching out to find out more.

Thanks. After stalking him over the internet (!) did you use him?Never used him and not sure he wants people to know his company/website or if the rules allow it but I worked it out (god that sounds stalky

I've got a few more years yet before I'm (hopefully!) in the position where I might need to think about it.
Put it this way the way I see it is I wouldn't let geographical proximity be a blocker if they're in a different part of the country and worst case you have a discussion and they're not the right fit for you or vice versa.

It might be helpful to know where you are located.
North London. Hadn't thought that important in this day and age of virtual meetings.Derek Chevalier said:
Agreed. COVID transformed many advice firms, with many switching in part or fully to virtual. Much more efficient when it comes to building and amending financial plans (often iterative involving several meetings). This means that the potential client is no longer limited to picking the best of a local bunch and has a better chance of finding the right fit.
Thanks Derek. And I love that you mention it being a two-way fit in your earlier post. BTW - not solely looking for one-off advice. I imagine we need some help structuring things initially, putting in place a plan, but then with periodic reviews (pre and post retirement, although we're thinking retirement might imminent).greengreenwood7 said:
chris bourne who like james shack has a ton of utibe videos works for an Org called Burgess and Lee. I had a couple of 1 off chats ahead of more detailed planning, and will likely revisit with them later this year.
