Ive got a mature American Tulip tree which has come out in leaf this year, it should do during the first part of April. It looks like it started to, and then just stopped (see pics).

So is it dead, could it leaf again next year?

Didn't we have a few frosty nights in the middle of April after it had been warm for a week? I think that's what happened near me.

I have a couple of oaks that are just about starting to bud. Still time yet I reckon.

Edit: one beech isn't out yet either, most of the rest are just starting.

Strange year for trees ... As my Farmer neighbour tells me :-

"Ash before Oak we're due for a Soak"
"Oak before Ash we're in for a Splash"

All the Oaks are in leaf , but my Ash tree has a sign of a leaf smile . ... Guess it's going to be Dry smile

Do you by any chance live in Wales? (they both sound like wet options)

I've never heard that one, I can never remember all these helpful rhymes though. I think they're harder than remembering the thing they're supposed to help with.

Ash is always very late to come into leaf compared with most other trees.

I have a mature oak right against my boundary fence and it is its flowers that are a pain, they drop into every cavity and aperture on my car and cover the drive in oak flowers. They are blooming now on that tree but another oak sapling in a pot still looks dead.

Being in a pot won't have helped. Scratch the side of a thin branch and see if it's green underneath (alive) or brown (dead).

The trees in and surrounding our garden are very odd this year . Oak much earlier, dreaded silver birch look like they are doing nothing, and a fancy tree in our front garden that has had stunning blossom before leaves every year ,looks absolutely stoned dead .

Don’t really have anything useful to say OP but I’d be amazed if a tree that looks like it is in its prime has just died unless there’s been extraneous factors. Hopefullly it is just having a lie in.

We did have a fir tree die on a us a few years ago but we’d had a spell of very dry and hot weather…I was absolutely gutted.

Thanks.

It's odd, been a bit dry but temps have been low.

Should have thought of this before post on Arbtalk….it’s Pistonheads for professional tree people smile

They have a homeowners tree advice form, pretty sure you’ll get some friendly free advice. You can post job adverts on there too so might find someone local to come and have a look.
