Panamera 970.1 cruise control

I've just bought a 2012 Panamera Diesel
When I engage cruise control, it drops 2-3 gears and stays there. Even if I'm sitting on 110Km/hr in 8th on a level road, and I engage cruise on and it will drop to 5th and stay in 5th gear at 110km/hr
This doesn't seem right. Any advice appreciated
