Our appallingly slow, low-spec 8-year-old Dell PC with Intel Celeron CPU is going to be replaced by a modern budget mini PC for general internet and light office use (mainly by my wife, who had no interest or desire to pay for a higher spec machine). The new PC’s CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G (4.4Ghz x 6 cores) with Radeon Vega Graphics and it will come with 16GB Kingston DDR4 3200MHz RAM.

I’ve never been a PC gamer and know next to nothing about required hardware for gaming, but with this PC being quite a bit more powerful than our old machine I quite fancy getting just one or two games that I can play occasionally. Nothing challenging - I don’t want to be getting too frustrated or stressed while playing. Just a chilled game that I can readily dip in and out of. My initial thought is Red Dead Redemption 2, which looks like it will last a long time for someone with limited gaming time and be pretty chilled once the basics are mastered. Do you think this game will run acceptably on a Ryzen 5600G? If not, any suggestions for chilled games for a casual gamer that would run well on this machine?

5600G on youtube

Just shy of 30 fps at 1080p low - probably get playable frame rates if you drop down to 720p.

If you want to play any relatively modern games then you really need a dedicated graphics card. Obviously this isn't going to work with a mini PC as there is neither the space or the power supply to run it.

If you want to play games I would look at getting a proper PC with a graphics card, rather than buying a mini PC and realising it isn't suitable for your needs.

Good video, thanks for the link. Many games appear to run surprisingly well on the 5600G though it’s obvious that the playing experience will be considerably inferior to that of a proper gaming PC. I’d be happy enough running RDR2 in 720p resolution on my run of the mill 24” monitor.

I’m only thinking of playing older games on this new PC. It wasn’t bought for gaming purposes and will mainly be used by my wife for internet and MS office tasks. Was just curious to try out a game or two on it given that it has some graphics capability. The PC I’ve ordered is not strictly speaking a ‘mini’ PC in fact, as it comes in a compact metal case that could be opened for access to the motherboard for upgrades.
