In view of the sentence handed to the driver for causing the death of a mother and daughter, anyone else think the sentence was a tad lenient?

Would auto pilot allow the car to travel at 90mph?

Yes.

Compare with this sentence:

Paddleboard company owner who caused four deaths sentenced to 10-and-a-half years in prison

The sentencing council is not fit for purpose.

It should be scrapped.

Wasn’t his driving dangerous? What was careless about it that wasn’t downright dangerous?

Lots of holes in the Swiss cheese had fatefully aligned that day resulting in the tragic consequences.

Shortly after, Zeineddine, who was driving a Tesla Model Y, aquaplaned while speeding at more than 90mph in the outside lane of the M4.
My Model Y won’t let me set the autopilot/adaptive cruise to anything over 90mph, which I’ve checked for curiosity.

6 months for each death is just appalling. Life is so cheap these days.

Here is another one, 1 yr detention for each life.

It just isn't good enough, I've never really understood the lack of decent sentences when a vehicle was involved in killing someone?

That's a middle class sentence if ever I've seen one.

How has he got away with a slap on the wrist for killing 3 people.

You literally get a harsher sentence for sending tweets.

But you are not really comparing anything similar in this example.

I'm torn, it was an accident, caused in part by his carelessness. He didn't set out that morning to kill his friends.

I remember the day I passed my test, so early 1988. Went back to 6th form and picked four mates up for a 'spin' in the Metro City 1L. That day we nearly had a head on with another car, which could have easily been as catastrophic, but luck was on our side that day and it was a near miss. The accident would have solely been my fault, a combination of inexperience, mates in the car, music on etc etc,

But it was a lesson quickly learnt rather than a devastating change of lives and futures. Kids be kids, some learn from their mistakes, some don't make it.

Despite this, data from his Tesla showed his speed was in excess of 90mph. Once his vehicle started to aquaplane in the standing water, due to the speed he was driving, he lost complete control.
Of course, it was the speed, only the speed.

Sentencing inadequate.

It was his own decisions that killed them. The car doesn’t do anything unless you make it.

You should always drive to the conditions. Even if that means slowing right down or not driving at all that day. For example, I wouldn’t even attempt to drive in deep snow.

Inappropriate speed, for the conditions, and/ or his capability.

Speed is rarely the defining issue.

I know, but why a harsher sentence? Professional negligence on her part?

If the Tesla driver had been a taxi driver and killed his two passengers because of his actions would he have got a harsher sentence? I know this is all whatiffery..

Usually yes he would, being a professional driver means there are higher expectations of your conduct and it would mean an uplifted sentence.

Comes a few days after the BBC published an article saying they're looking at life sentences for cyclists who kill.

Killing someone in a car must be the most lenient way to kill someone from a consequences of actions POV.

That's a bit of a misrepresentation.
