Given the sink rate and the Phantom being an 'energy' aircraft as opposed to a 'thrust' aircraft I would guess there a lot more luck than judgment going on there!

Apparently the engines on a Phantom are angled so the thrust is slightly downwards. So slamming the throttle open tends to push the nose down

It can't be helpful for turkish airforce recruiters to have to explain how you might end up flying the same plane as grandpa, I assume it's now just a grudge match with Greece to see who can keep them flying the longest.

I think if flying an F4 is the worst part of the job nobody is going to be too reluctant.
Even if they all still training newbies to fly Phantoms the upside is they will probably get to retrain on something else within a few years. Might be preferable to staying on one type for your whole career.
