Hi people,
I'm having a wee problem with my gearbox, it is crunching in 3rd, going both up and down the gears, goes in fine with low (2000 ish) revs but grinds with a vengeance under acceleration.
I assume this is the synchromesh not playing ball?

how easy is it to pull apart the box and replace the parts (having never done it before)or is it best to throw some money at it and get a refurb unit?

It's probably best to get a re-con unit from someone like Canley Classics (but I am lazy and have too much experience of ending up spending more on all the other problems you find when you get inside part X than the re-con unit would have cost).

You can do it your self and it's meant to be relativly straight forward, but making sure you get a good set of syncro rings is tricky these days - there are some terrible after market ones from Eastern Europe out there that fail after 6k-10k.

If you have a good clean work space and a Haynes/Triumph workshop manuel feel free to give it a go though.

The main things to watch for are:
- Clutch release arm pivot pin. Check for wear as they tend to become loose and eventually fall through and rattle around the bottom of the bell housing.
- Darn syncro hub springs. Each syncro hub has 3 tiny springs that make a break for freedom when you try to remove the mainshaft.

No, it's certainly possible...

Someone reputable like Canley will do a recon box for £215, and if you want smoother cruising, an overdrive conversion for £750 (all parts inc recon gearbox).

If you can find a O/D Spit. 1500 being broken, you can get the same for a lot less (but have the gamble about it's condition).

Frontline Spriget (www.mgcars.org.uk/frontline/pricelst.htm) do the Spit. 1500/Ford kit for selling the Ford conversion for £875.

Autogear (.co.uk) want £1118.

There is nothing wrong with Triumph box for the sort of power out of a stock or even fast road Spitfire 1500. You only need to be concerned in a Gitfire/GT6 with a fast road engine, where the (metal cutting) swap to a big saloon box is preferred by some. That said the TR/TSSC racing championship require standard gearboxes and don't have any real issues.

Thanks for the info.
Based upon finances and your advice I think the ford /triumph conversion might be excessive for the time being.
I have been offered a box for £100 second hand that has been restored inside; hopefully the synchromesh will be ok. Just have to look into fitting it. See what Haynes has to say on the matter.

Swapping one 1500 box for another is relativly straight forward - gearbox tunnel cover out, support with a jack from below, bolts out then pull out through the (protected) passenger seat.

Then it's the infamous "refitting is reversal of removal".
