Childish and petty, but no worse than his swipe! 
Not sure why the big deal - I think that if a girl gets told she is driving a mans car then that is a compliment. I love to see my wife driving my cerb and my previous 'mens cars'. She always got lots of attention in them (is this good or not!?)
However the reverse is worse ie being told as a guy that you are driving a girls car (Boxster, MX5, new mini, 3 series convertible etc....).

I had a girlfriend who'd had 3 Chim's and eventually moved on to a T350T. Was great to see her behind the wheel of these cars, she looked fab' and was a far better driver than I. Sadly (it's a long story), she moved on to a 996 rag top. Even a mate of mine who's 'Porker' through and through tried to disuade her from going that route simply because his thoughts were as mine. Just wasn't the same; there's something special about a girl in a Tiv.

Its not so much what he said more the way he said it.
Very dismissive, like I had no right to be in a TVR and should be driving, say my old Vitara.
Normally I have positive comments, mainly when I am in petrol stations, people (well men) walk past and virtually always say "Nice Car". Some even stop for a natter.
Next time I will know what to say to him.

i think it coud be a perception that Tvrs are hard to drive and have no aids etc so some guys think women might get into trouble in one , this of course is rubbish both sexes have good and bad drivers, i saw a girl(well 30 ish) driving a Tamora the other day and i thought it looked great, far better than the obvious choice of SLK or Z4 which is so commonplace, good on her.
