The lever was hard to pull then snapped I can still open the bonnet through the grill by pulling the cable down… does that cable look out of place or where could the problem be please !!

If the lock works OK then I suppose the next most likely cause is that the cable has seized.

Almost certainly an ‘overload’ in the system. It has always been common for the bonnet-latch to get rusty at its bearing surface on pretty much every car I have owned. It is up front and, although hidden, exposed to all the elements. It should be regularly cleaned and greased.
