thats sad news, a superb driver in anything (as shown by his many appearances at the Goodwood revival events).

A tough andvery fast racer - as well as a long time serious yachtsman. And a popular fixture at Goodwood. The number of drivers from Seventies F1 is dwindling fast .

RIP Jochen.
I have great memories of watching him in group C all those years ago. Peak motorsport for me

Dad had the pleasure of interviewing him for the American Mercedes Club magazine (The Star) a few years ago and had only good things to say. Motorsport legend.

Very sad, I thought I watched him die some years ago at Goodwood, coming out of the chicane he rolled a Ferrari Squalo into one of the plant holders

Helped out of the car by one of the other competitors (forget the driver's name) Maserati 250 techno?

Sad news. I never met him, but a Canadian friend who travels over for all the Goodwood events has, several times, and said he was an exceptionally friendly and generous guy. Obviously great race driver too.

RIP

My son has this hanging on his bedroom wall:

I bought it after I went to Le Mans for the first time in 1989. It shows the winning Mercedes driven by Mass, co-driven by Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens. Mass was always a firm favourite thereafter.

As a side note, just how big a legend do you have to be to get an obituary on Pistonheads? Not a mention on the front page.

Oh , you need to have had multiple F1 wins - because nothing else counts , right ? And preferably to have been racing in Grands Prix within the last 30 years maximum. Because history only started about 1987. Same thing happened when the great Dan Gurney died - who he ?

Mass should definitely qualify under that. A fantastic driver and seemingly a very decent chap as well. An F1 winner and Le Mans winner. Not a bad CV to have...

Never heard a bad word about him, and seen some amazing driving by him.

The Driver's lounge in Valhalla will welcome him with open arms.

I see that an obituary has now been posted: thank you, Pistonheads, I withdraw my comment.

When I was but a boy, with my best friend, at Silverstone, for the 6 hrs endurance Mr Mass told us to push of when we were we shouldn't have been . Security. What was that !
Later that day a certain Mr J Stewart blew our tent over with his Helicopter when he landed alongside the camping field.
Those were the days. Up close and personal to all the action
RIP JM. you crammed more into your shortish years than most .

RIP Jochen.

He was an important part of my teenage brain's perception of the sporting world in the 1980s, dominated as it was by the following:

Group C - Porsche 956/962
F1 - McLaren, Williams
Group B - Audi, Peugeot (flashes of Lancia)
Cricket - Windies, Essex/Middlesex
Tennis - Lendl, Becker
Football - Liverpool, Germany
America's Cup - Australia II, Dennis Connor
